Using the Orinoco cliet manager with Windows XP

Hi,

I despise the Windows XP built in client manager, for several reasons.. Clunky, all the 'are you sure you want to connect to an unencrypted network' prompts etc.

Is there a way to use the Orinoco wireless manager? I've disabled the windows xp built in client manager, but the Orinoco wireless manager prompts to use it.

So.. Has anyone worked around this and got it working, and if so, how?

Yep, tried that, and still no go.
If you do that, and go to the client manager, it says to go to the Windows XP manager and use that to modify the settings.

yeah, regardless of whether or not you disable the windows client manager, the orinoco client manager (at least the one that comes in the retail box) prompts you with a dialog box to use the xp control panel. anybody know a way around?

You can diasable it in the XP services control panel. It is called Wireless Zero Configuration Service. Stop the service and then set the startup type to disable

This is my work around (for I too despise the XP client manager, especially after the upgrade to SP1).

Go to the network control panel and uncheck "allow windows to configure..."

Go to Start -> All Programs -> Orinoco/Wireless -> Wireless Network Settings (provided that you've installed the software) and create your connection profile.

Launch the client manager.

Your resulsts may vary.

I'm assuming that nobody has the Client Manager running under XP.

I don't either. Of course, I haven't really tried to fix it other then disabling Zero Configuration Services.

I've searched the Lucent site for the Win 2000 Manager and haven't found it.

A simple alternative is to download and use the Boingo connection manager. It makes it pretty easy to connect and disconnect to the signals you want.

You have to disable Wireless Zero Configuration service and then install the Orinoco client manager in WIndows 2000 mode.

Can anyone advise how to install it in Win2000 mode? I tried installing Client Manager by making all the .exe files in the CM install directory to run in "windows 2000" compatibility mode... But I still get pestered by the, "you must use WinXP network connections panel to change wireless config settings...." when trying to access it in Client Manager. I then tried running CMLUC.exe in Win2000 compatibility mode and I get all these .dll errors so I assume this is wrong too.

TIA

got it

I was wondering myself how to get around using the WinXP wireless config in favor of the orinoco one for managing profiles. I finally figured out that what Chris was saying was right. However, the installer you need to use is the Winter 2002 Client Software- available
HERE . Download that. Turn off Wireless Zero Config in XP services, then exit the client software if you have it installed and running, and set the installer to Windows2000 Compatability mode and install. You can now open the Orinoco Client Manager and use their Profile Manager as well. Enjoy

In this way I can install and run the Client manager, but it says "No wireless card is present" even if the Orinoco driver is installed.

My card is Linksys WPC54g.

*SIGH* Some people really ought to donate their brains to science, as they appearently don't use it themselves...

Try to use an Orinoco card... Then the Orinoco client manager would detect a card which it supports... My guess is that would fix the problem of the Orinoco Client manager saying "No wireless card is present".

Just my 0.02€'s worth...
