The trial package lets you get a good look at the program...but the 60 days creeps up really fast.

Program is worth it for its analysis capabilities alone.

Most interesting, in simple speak it takes your ns1 exported to summary file and uses mappoint to map out your aps... real pretty, real informative... in fact it is what most windows users use to chart their maps... what were you planning to use?

You can find it here:

i was planning on useing jjkaczor's(i think thats how you say it) script. i would link you, but for some reason this mac wont copy the link . Its in the script section as the first thread. The one that has live position tracking from netstumbler to map point .
and i guess i had heard about stumbverter(i had thought it was a feature included in netstumbler, not a seperate program)

My script does not provide accurate results. It's just a nifty thing to have Netstumbler showing a *somewhat* real-time MapPoint map. It display "circles", which are "summary results", not individual AccessPoints. It also shows where your current location is. I'm going to revisit it soon to track some further bugs, but ultimately until NetStumbler/Marius gives individual AP's found, this script will never be as accurate as exporting your data from Netstumbler, and mapping it using other tools.

I use it for "coolness" factor. it helps me drive, when in a strange city, and it's nice for the "navigator" (if I have one).

I use Stumbvertor to display accurate results after a run. (well I would, if I wasn't getting an 'Automation Error 5'... gotta fall back, or muck with the registry see whats wrong.)

You should still be able to...after all, the .ns1 is still being kept up-to-date regardless of the script or utility you're running.

Stupid Question

This is about MapPoint 2k2.. I can't find the answer on their website.

Does it come with all the maps for the continental US?? I've seen some mapping software were you have to buy individual maps..

Plus, once i plug in my NS and MS logs, Will it display them along with demographics for that area??? (My main reason for wanting this program, is to chart where wifi is mostly used based on a age/income demographic..)

Sorry for the stupid question, I did search but didn't see an answer...

TIA!

Not a stupid question, Mappoint comes bundled with Navtech streets, and GDT data for gecoding, and a good sized points of interest database for North America.

MapPoint does not include census demographics. You may be able to purchase additional demographics from 3rd party vendors. Try www.mp2kmag.com for more info on mappoint and mappoint programming.

That sucks..

I took it to mean that they HAD that information already w/ in the program..

So not only do I have to purcahse the software, but I have to drop a lot more money to obtain demographics?

Doh - Just searched again on mappoint's site... this was in the faq section...

Q. What kind of demographic data is included with MapPoint, and how can I obtain updates?

A. MapPoint ships with business-related demographic data provided by Claritas, Inc., (for the United States) and CompuSearch (for Canada). MapPoint 2002 demographic data includes populations, household sizes, household income, median population age, and population by age. It's broken down according to country, state, county, metropolitan area, ZIP Code, and census tract region.

From the Help tool in MapPoint, you can also link to Claritas, CompuSearch, and other affiliates for supplemental demographic variables and updates. You can acquire, import, and map these additional demographics for use in MapPoint.

MapPoint also enables users to import or link their own data from a wide variety of tabular data sources, including some versions of Access, Excel, Outlook contacts, delimited text, and most OLE databases and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data sources.

Ooops, just checked it and the demographic data is buried under "territories." In order to get to the data you have to build a map using the GUI to classify some variable against a set of boundaries.

I'm sure you can can access it programatically in MapPoint or just use the GUI, but I would rather just pull down the boundaries from the Census and run a point-in-polygon routine and dump out the raw tabs for analysis.
