WiMap is back

I took down the WiMap page at http://www.honet.com/WiMap a while back because Delorme had so badly broken the drawing data import in Street Atlas 200x versions that I got quite a large volume of email with questions about why none of the graphic features work with SA versions after Street Atlas 9 (SA7 was the latest version I had available when the app was first coded).

Today, for the first time in years, I bought a new edition of SA (Street Atlas 2005) and discovered that Delorme have at least restored the ability to select the type of symbol to be displayed when drawing objects are imported. So, I hacked together a new version of WiMap that will at least display WEP-using networks as a red 'X', and non-WEP networks as a map pin.

As before, however, there is no control over size and color (or any other attribute that I can determine) so things like text size and color will default to whatever you set them to before doing the import.

Bug reports for issues other than the ongoing Delorme brokitude are welcome.

I have at long last gotten off my duff and added Garmin support to WiMap, so the latest version at http://www.honet.com/WiMap/wimap08.zip will now export PCX5 .wpt files. See the disclaimers at http://www.honet.com/WiMap/MapSource.htm for the usual lame limitations.

Thanks to a user in Canada for reporting a couple of really stupid coding errors in the Garmin output section. (Turning off WEP code or channel number in the waypoint comment would introduce garbage in the comment and the waypoint symbol code.) Version 0.8.1 is now up on the site.

"As with newer version of Delorme Street Atlas, there's no direct control over color or size of symbol, so our coding of points is limited to "Diamond, Red" for WEP enabled and "Diamond, Green" for non-WEP APs."

I stumbled accross a very good 'dump' of what codes are used for what symbols in the Garmin .wpt file at:

http://home.online.no/~sigurdhu/MapSource-text.htm

I was able to change the 2 designator to 16391 and -poof!- I got a 'tower' symbol!
