Windows software access point

I am wanting to use a wireless card in my laptop as an access point. Does anyone know of any free software that can do this. I dont need many features, I just want it to access a local webserver running on my comuter. I am trying to create a long rage link with my friend and I want something to test it with.

I believe that Windows XP will inherently do this if you run the card in Ad-hoc mode. Search on that.

I dont want to use adhoc mode because netstumbler on other computers dosnt seem to detect my card when it is in adhoc mode. I want the card to act like an access point so I can monitor the signal strenght to allign the antennas.

I might be able to use adhoc mode if anyone can tell me how to get netstumbler to detect the card when it is n adhoc mode on another computer.

Idealy I would like a program like SoftAP but because I'm not going to be using it very much, I cant justify buying it.

While my financial situation should be none of your concern, I'll enlighten you. I am a grade 11 high school student who earns minimum wage along with going to school. That $20 represents 3.8 hours of work for me. I would prefer to spend that money on something that I will use more then once.

I was just asking a simple question and I'd really hoped that people would be kind enough to offer advice without the cynicism in your post. I guess that i may be naive in my assumptions that a noob like me can expect more knowledgeable people to be helpful but then again, I am an optimistic person. Maybe next time you will remember that you might not know all the details of a persons life and you will give a little more thought before posting a scornful comment like that.

btw, If your post was supposed to be funny, maybe you should look up the word tact in the dictionary.

I believe that it basically comes down to, "you gotta pay to play". There isn't always a free solution, and not everything in life is free. Get over it. If you don't/can't pay for it, then I guess you'll have to just do without. Life sucks, doesn't it?

It's good that you have a job, but it's still only $20. If you want it, get it. Skip lunch for a a couple of days, ride the bus for a week instead of taking car. Just don't whine.

And no, there's no tact here. If you want technical information, its the right place. If you want to feel good about yourself, go watch Oprah.

I really didn't mean anything by my comment. I actually had posted the link and then re-read the post for a freeware ap, so I just threw in the last comment as a "by the way" in a last minute edit.

Since you are so willing to give advice, here's a couple suggestions for you.

1. Stop being so f*cking sensitive. This is the internet, everyone is brusque.

2. You obviously have more time than money so try a linux solution. You will soon learn 2 things:

a. A whole bunch about linux
b. That deploying any of the linux solutions will exceed easily the amount of time you could spend earning 20 bucks.

3. Your question really deserved a STFW bitch slap, but you were given reasonable answers. Don't berate people that are trying to help you.

4. Don't take yourself seriously.

wise man once said "Nothing is free" and he is 110% correct, you can have all the nothing you want for FREE.

if 20.00 is too much for you to spend ask yourself this.. how much do you spend on the electricity for your PC? Or does mommy and daddy cover that.

It costs money for some things unless you are willing to search (google and "other" sites) for a demo copy, or one that has been "tainted" so you only spend time downloading it. but like so many here, we have years of experience (1st pc bought october 15th 1985, got online november 17th 1985 on a 300 baud modem) under our belts that we know where to look, often times its that smart guy named "Manual" or we search via google.

Point is, if its a 1 time use deal, find a trial version that works for 15-20 days, use it then discard. But if its something you are going to use often (once a day) pay for it.... everyone else in here I am SURE got their hardware and software *LEGALLY* (cough cough cough.....)

but you get the point..

Hmm,
People seem to think I care about the money or that I'm too sensitive or that I should get over it. Well, I posted that because I've gotten replies like that on several forums for different reasons. It's quite frustrating how cynical and negative people are most of the time. I don't want any sympathy or something like that, I'm just quite frustrated that people would rather make a snide remark rather then stating the fact "There is no free AP software that I know of" or "you probably just have to buy the software" or not respond at all.

well I guess I've made plenty of enemies here so I wont stick around.
Bye

So you do not know how to google search and all that to find software of this flavor? Pity....
