Wireless Network Questions

I'm a little unsure of where to put this or if this board minds me asking it here.

A friend of mine got a new laptop from their work. The laptop is for home use only, they work out of their house. But the employer had the driver for the internal wireless card deleted.

Then they told her they installed JumpStart to break the wireless.

The IT guy told her what they did and told her it wouldn't be hard for her to have someone undo it.

I got the driver reinstalled no problems. But I don't know what JumpStart is or how to disable it. I did a google search and came up with something from Atheros where it's a way to enable encryption in 3 mouse clicks but I didn't find anything about managing it.

Does anyone have any experience with this and how to get rid of it so they can use wireless?

Thanks,
J

Sounds to me as though it was intentionally disabled so that she couldn't use it. Therefore, she shouldn't. I would think that the IT guy shouldn't be telling her to try to bypass what appears to be a company policy. If wireless access isn't necessary to do her job then apparently she doesn't need it.

If she wants to use a notebook via wireless then she should buy her own and not use a company laptop for it.

And WTF does this have to do with NEWS?

I stuck this in News cause it was the most general forum I could find. I know it doesn't fit, but wasn't sure where else it could go. Please move it if it offends.

Wireless is required to do her job as weird as that sounds. She travels across a region and it's company policy to allow wireless. But they got a new regional director that doesn't want wireless used in the office, but like I said she doesn't work in the office she works at home but IT is required to disable all laptop wireless. That's why they told her what they did, so she could undo it.

Sounds to me like a Catch22 that needs to be resolved inside her company.

Then shouldn't her IT department resolve the issue for her? If you try to fix it and break it somehow then you're just gonna piss of her IT department as they'll have to go back and reconfigure her notebook for her. If they know what they did, then they should be able to undo it.

I'm saying this because I've been that person in IT that had to fix hundreds of notebooks because someone on the outside thought they'd 'help' and fix a problem and more times than not made matters worse. If it's really required to do her job, then her own IT department should fix it.

I think the newbie lounge would be best. After all the OP didn't read the forum descriptions and is clearly a newb.

Umm, Something I just noticed. Post #1 and Post #3.

Being the IT guy at my company and having to deal with wired and wireless, she needs to get her boss to show this person that her job needs her to have wifi ON for when she travels. When she is in the office she can use the wire. I have a few people here at my place that do such. When here, they use the wire, at home they use their own wifi. I do not have an AP's here at work so the wireless in their laptop won't connect to the network.. a rogue ap, maybe but I routinely scan with ministumbler around the building to see if one pops up.

This is best handled via the political channels at her company.

My money is on moving it to the Bin. I can't see what this has to do with Netstumbler, WiFi Auditing, or WiFi security in general.

This is NOT a general "Help me with whatever hardware/software problem I'm to stupid to figure out on my own" forum.

This is the NETSTUMBLER forum for crying out loud. Get that into your thick skulls, or I will clone both G8t and his nailstudded bat, and unleash that terrifying army on ya'll.
