Booting Linux on the laptop and other 64 bit rigs
For the record:
For the pavillion zv5000 and zv5000z with the new 64bit athalon and and all laptops or computers with a true 64 bit chip, to get linux to load, you must specify noapic. the reason is because linux sees 64 bits of processing power, it simply assumes you are running a dual proc rig. In order to use this feature, linix loads an Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (APIC). this is designed to handle Interrupt requests (IRQ) and pass them off to the approperate processor. Because you don't actually have a dual proc machiene, this driver causes a crash in the CPU and halts the system load. So the HP are actually verry linux friendly, however, most of them come with a broadcom card and apparently can't packet sniff. However because the driver they come packaged with has a network monitoring feature and does determine wheather the network is open, encripted or ad-hoc, this makes me think that contraty to popular belief they may have some packet sniffing capabilities. so, as far as I know, the do not yet work with airsnort |
