ok, here's the problem i have. i was running my laptop on 98 just fine with my buffalotech card. only problem was that i had to reboot after changing any network settings, and that's a bitch. so i busted out my xtra copy of xp pro and went to town. scans fine with stumbler, but only the access points i'm connected to stay lit up. anything else will light up for one beacon, then go away, even if it's strong. if i turn off the zero config service, it won't pick up anything. if i turn off net stumbler, the built in windows scanner can see other networks fine. i've tried every combination i can find of turning on and off optional wireless settings through windows. anybody had this problem b4?

ssid is blank. which always worked b4. but what i've been doing lately is having the computer connect to an access point that's in my car that way i know it's still scanning. i've had issues b4 where i was mapping a new area and i'd drive for quite a while without finding anything. then i'd come to an area i was familiar with and wouldn't find access points that should be there. reboot and they'd pop up. short answer: no

yes they are. they use an orinoco chipset. works beautifully. or at least used to. i've got an orinoco silver card also. it's my backup card incase i break my buffalo. will happen someday. i spent half the day fixing dongles for external antennas and rewiring shitty APs for externals. so lots of stuff gets broken.....

to my knowledge my buffalo card didn't come with a client program. all i got with it was the software to configure a buffalo access point which i don't own. at current i'm using the windows drivers, because i installed windows while driving down the road in my friend's car. i'm currently working on getting all my updates including looking for newer drivers and firmware

it uses the orinoco chipset, but is a different card. kind of like how saphire or tyan release ati grafix cards. the driver is different for the 2 cards, because i did try b4 to get them to use eachother's drivers when i didn't have cds handy and it wasn't happy. i found a driver update for the buffalo, but they didn't have a firmware update :-/

I'm having the same problem
I have a dell inspiron with a pentium m 2.4, Built in wireless.
Netstumbler will work for awhile as long as it's finding aps. But if it doesn't find them for awhile it won't find them at all. I can park in front of my house and it won't pick up my own signal. If I shut off netstumbler and start it back up it will work. Just wondering if there is something I can do about it. BTW this is my first post. Lots of info and great ideas. |
