I wasted $50 already only to find the Buffalo WLI-CB-G54A only works in the place of a AirPort card, not alongside with one. Because my Powerbook, a new 1.67GHz model, has built in wireless that cannot be easily removed, I cannot use this card.
I want a wireless card with an external antenna port that can be used for wardriving with a program like KisMac. Ideally I'm looking for card that will have better range than my built in wireless but having the antenna port will solve this. I've looked at Orinoco gold classic cards, which go for about $50 but only support 802.11B networks. The Dell re-branding of this card is a bit cheaper but more difficult to find. There seems to be good support for the Orinoco card in terms of drivers around and many people using it for wardriving. Is this my best choice for a PCMCIA card though in terms of performance, range and useability? |

If all you're going to use it for is wardriving then yes it's the best card out there. I either have my gold card or silver card in my powerbook for driveing. Can't really use the gold now till I get my new cable. For kismac the drivers are there and it works great.

Dumb question: In the Dells, (and others,) the internal card can be disabled via BIOS. Is that an option for you?

I've asked around on the Apple forums but no one seems to think it's possible to disable it and yet still retain the ability to use the Buffalo card natively. Disabling AirPort extensions will mean the Buffalo card wont work.
And on second examination, I'd like to use the card to connect with, as well. I mean if it will have better range than my internal antenna I'd like to be able to use it to surf with, even if it means loading a 3rd party driver or changing a software setting to switch to it from my main internal wireless. Is the Orinoco card not good as a client card on the mac? |

Don't know, the only drivers I've see for it come with kismac. I've never used a third party card to connect. My internal works just fine for that.
