Mac Related Qns
Hi there.
I am interested in doing some wardriving. I am also in the market for a mac (first time buyer) and now they can run things like linux etc no problem. So I was wondering if there are any expansion cards that the mac will work with yet will also work with netstumbler/kismet/other wep cracking tools/remote-exploit/all other equipment etc. Is the integrated wireless supported by remote-exploit (backtrack) and is all the other apps supported because that would be awesome although the only problem is not being able to connect an antenna. Any ways around this? Any software recommendations for the mac so I dont have to boot up linux? Finally what about things like gps units etc - any reccommendations or do most work. I am rather reluctant to buy another windows machine because I've had enough and have been looking forward to the switch to macs for a while now. |

Netstumber is a pc only program. The internal wireless won't work with it booted into windows either. Last time I checked kismet is a no go as well. I haven't seen too many express card wifi cards. You're probably out of luck there too. Kismac is running spotty on the macbook pro's. I don't think backtrack will even boot on an macbook pro. Haven't tried it though. I did try booting knoppix on an intel iMac and it didn't work. I use a garmin eTrex with a keyspan serial to usb adapter with my powerbook. Works great. Should also work with the macbook pros.

Hi everyone.
Thank's for the response. I really appreciate it. Thanks Barry for the useful information. I was under the impression that all linux distros pretty much booted - Its no problem I mean ubuntu has discs for the mac so I could jsut shove all the apps onto ubuntu. Thanks again. Barry |

@OP
It sounds like you are just interested in expanding your knowledge of the wonderful world of wifi. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check the knowledge base of threads on this website. Search ALOT. Read the stickies. Check out the welcome desk. Find out what's OK and what's not. Even if you are not using NS you will find information here that will keep you out of trouble. As far as add on cards (PCMCIA) the WaveLAN Bronze, which is older seems to be happy with everything I stick it in. I do know it will run KisMAC on the PowerPC platform and Kismet in any case. |

T2 6.0.0 and Sabayon Linux 3.0 are supposed to work on that unholy Frankenstein monster, the Apple Macintosh/Intel. Yellow Dog used to be a MOL (Mac On Linux) distro, but I don't know what the status of it is, or if there was ever a live version. Google terms to get you started: MOL live distro

Yellow Dog, last I heard isn't going to support the intel macs. As long as the distro supports EFI, which alot (most) don't, they won't boot on the new macs. Best way to play with linux is pick up a cheap laptop off ebay. Or take a chance with one of those pieces of trash at Wally World. Supposedly I have a new MacBook pro on order for work. Once I get it I'm sure I'll find some linux distro that will work on it. I think you can get redhat working with parallels.
