I have a TRENDnet wireless USB 2.0 adapter, TEK-429UB, which I'm trying to use with an original flat screen iMac (OSX 10.4.8, but with only USB 1.1). I've downloaded and installed the drivers, with Info.plist file in /System/Library/Extensions/ZD1211Mac.kext/Contents [there's also a ZD1215Mac.kext directory], and changed the Product and Vendor ID numbers to match what System Profiler shows (below) (converted to decimal), but the WLAN utility doesn't recognize the stick, and no new port shows up when trying to define a new port configuration via Network in System Preferences.

Is there something else I'm missing? or maybe this doesn't work with USB 1.1? Can anyone confirm or disconfirm?

many thanks,
Bill Benson

USB Bus:

Host Controller Location: Built In USB
Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBOHCI
PCI Device ID: 0x0026
PCI Revision ID: 0x0000
PCI Vendor ID: 0x106b
Bus Number: 0x18

USB2.0 WLAN:

Version: 48.02
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: ZyDAS
Product ID: 0x300b
Vendor ID: 0x157e

What did TRENDnet support say when you contacted them with your problem ? You did contact them, didn't you ?

If you did not contact them, then go to the Welcome Desk section RIGHT NOW and read all the threads there. Pay particular note to the thread regarding problems with your hardware.

If you DID contact them, and they were unable to solve your problem, then bitch about it TO THEM, untill they do fix it for you.

Looks like you're SOL till they make compatible drivers. You do know most of the newer macs have wifi built in right?

Dutch - Trendnet doesn't support OSX for this product, and their tech support person simply reiterated that. A propos your suggestion, I couldn't find the Welcome Desk, per se, though there's a "Help Desk" that's "temporarily down due to an application upgrade", so I don't see any threads at all. You seem to be suggesting there's a known hardware difficulty... ?

The CD included with the stick has only windows software, which is discouraging, but not definitive. The original post in this thread mentions a similar Trendnet product supported by the Zydas drivers, and the Mac System Profiler identifies the 429UB as "Zydas". And the Zydas (now Atheros) web site and download files do have an up-to-date OSX driver (which work with a dozen or so other sticks) and user guide, so it's at least worth a try..

I'm simply asking if anyone has had success (or not) with this particular stick.
thanks
-Bill

Does anybody have the latest ZyDAS 1211-based WiFi drivers for Mac OS X 10.4? None of the URLs mentioned earlier in this thread work anymore.

I've shot off an email to the people on this page:
http://www.atheros.com/RD/

...but it's probably a shot in the dark. Anybody care to post the latest drivers on a temporary server or send me a PM with contact information?

You need to improve your google-fu. You also didn't mention which card/USB stick you had, so you didn't give anything to work with.

The first result from google gives this: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Drivers...B-driver.shtml

I hope you weren't looking for a spoonfeeding were you?

Thanks for your reply, but I don't think you have:

- Tried the download link you gave me, which only points to the now defunct ZyDAS website. (Of course I'd already been there. I don't expect you to verify every download link, but please scale back on the sarcasm. I'm not a newbie and prefer not to be treated as one.)

- Read this thread - which makes the outer branding of the USB stick irrelevant. But fair enough, it's a 3Com 3CRUSB10075. I know how to go about modifying Product and Vendor IDs in order to make the generic drivers work.

All atheros.com and zydas.com.tw links I've found are dead and I have so far located no mirrors on the net - believe me, I have looked. This why I'm asking for somebody to either send me the most recent drivers or point me to a non-obvious mirror.

thanks again,
Smilespray

Obviously you haven't read the entire thread, you obviously missed #9. Here's a linky for you: ZD1211 USB WLAN with Zydas OS X drivers

Fair enough.

I posted the links in this forum too because this is the top Google page for people who use this chipset and this is where I first learned about the vendor hacks. I have posted on other Mac-specific sites too.

Yes, it's technically off-topic, but give us Mac users with few USB WiFi options a little leeway - we are NetStumbler users too.

I apologise. I actually read both the forum rules and the FAQ before posting the links but I must have missed something. I thought my rationale was good enough.

Anyway, sorry for pissing you guys off. I only wanted to spread a little Mac love and ask for some specific help, but as you've suggested I'll saunter over to a more appropriate forum.

It's pretty clearly stated in the FAQs and the Rules that we don't support "warez" or illegal distribution of software.

Claiming that you believe it to be "fair use" doesn't necessarily cover you. I saw what your rationale was, and understand what you are saying, but the fact remains that you were posting about distributing something you don't own, didn't produce, and have no right to distribute. Under several US, UK and International Intellectual Property laws that makes it blatantly illegal. If you want to run the risk, that's your decision, but I can't have the NS Forums at risk as an accessory to it.
