think twice

ok, here's the issue that I'm seeing. Trying a real world test at the office since we move tons of data over wifi daily.

The ONLY way that airodump will work is if I have Airsnort running. If I start it like

airodump eth0 crack

I get the following error.

unsupported hardware link type 1
expected ARPHRD_IEEE80211 or ARPHRD_IEEE80211_PRISM

The card is a original lucent gold and I'm running Slackware 9.1

eth0 is known as the wireless interface on the laptop also.

That's why I am grumpy... Had it working for 10 minutes, and I decided to do better... Give me one or two more days, it's broken right now.

How am I suppose to hijack the thread now? You blew away my cunning plan. Argh... Going mental... Nevertheless I am impressed. The avatar matches the question.

Your card is in Managed mode (linktype 1 = Ethernet, not 802.11), you must put it in RFMON mode with iwconfig eth0 mode Monitor; iwconfig eth0 channel <CH>. I have already explained this in readme.txt, but I agree the error message above isn't too informative - I'll have to change it in the next release

Thanks very much, I had a look at your pcap file, and this is indeed a bug in the BSSID check code, to be fixed in aircrack 2.1

Now when I type.

iwconfig eth0 mode Monitor

I get this error

root@wireless2:~# iwconfig eth0 mode Monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) "
SET failed on device eth0 ; Invalid Argument

It's a Lucent Gold card, everything's patched on my system and it works fine with Kismet so it can go into monitor mode.

Any idea's as I really don't like firing up Airsnort just to use this util also.

Thanks

PS, Anyone that thinks of flaming me for this, think long and hard and then ask yourself is it worth it.

The patched Orinoco drivers don't support the wireless extensions method of enabling monitor mode. Try "iwpriv eth0 monitor 2 1" where "2" is monitor mode and "1" is the channel number. Running "iwpriv eth0 monitor 0 1" should revert to managed mode, but it's often better just to run "cardctl eject ; cardctl insert" instead.

Does anyone no if its possible to resume progress on Airodump using the Windows version.

I thought starting the program and using the same .pcap file name would work, but it actully starts again.

Thanks

Yep. aircrack 2.1 will be released when it's ready, maybe this week, maybe later.

To answer another question, you can resume a monitoring session with airodump, the packets are appended at the end of the existing capture file. Also, you can use multiple pcap input files in aircrack.
