Dam, no embedded IDE or PCMCIA.

You almost have the perfect board for another market! Are you developing these boards or just reselling them?

If you could get embedded IDE or a PCMCIA slot along with watchdog, for the right price, you could sell a ton of these things. Oh, PoE (power over ethernet) is desireable.

The PCMCIA slot is for the wNIC and the IDE would just allow an "IDE to PCMCIA" converter to be added if PCMICA wasn't native on the board.

Can we trade 2 of the 3 NICs in for the above?! Heck, how about USB ports for HDs and NICs??

I know a few of the guys...

...at wirelesscpe.com

In fact, one or two of them were there with me at the Miami NAP when I discovered they had that open AP.

WirelessCPE runs a WISP in Miami and they custom create APs. They also monitor the WISP lists and when they find enough interest in a feature, they add it to their APs.

Great stuff!

advantech

I've got an advantech board that fits into a 3.5" bay. Its a 300mhz mediagx board. 64M ram, USB, 3 serial, parallel, 10/100 ethernet, 2 PCMCIA (in a pc-104 module), and a 20G ibm laptop drive. Works fine w/OpenBSD and linux. I've got linux running on it right now, and run Kismet. It'll take CF, but I think the CF gets disabled if you throw a drive on it (I used to run it on a 128M CF drive, but switched over to IDE when I was making it into a mp3 machine for my car.)..

Anyway.. Works fine with kismet and either a linksys card or a dlink dwl650 modded with an external 24dbi parabolic.

I like the idea of throwing it into a pelican case. I hadn't thought of that. I had been throwing it in a 30cal ammo can. The whole thing runs on 5v (actually, takes a regular internal power connection, but the 12V isn't really used.) It'll run for over a week on a decent sized gel cel.

CPU Unit:

PCMCIA PC-104 board:

The PCMCIA boards pop up on ebay every now and then. Mine was like $25. The CPU board was around $300, and the drive was another $100 (again, ebay).

I've also got a 8 port RS232 module for it that I'm not using. It was going to hook into my GPS, OBD-II, and Radar detector, as well as having a palm pilot PPP connection. If anyone wants it, its for sale...

another option.. Fujitsu Pen Tablets are cheap..

I'm getting one of these off ebay. They're plentiful and going for < $150. 486/100 w/2.1G drive and 40-64M ram. 1 PCMCIA slot. No FDD or CDrom. 800x600 Dual Scan touch screen.

I havn't seen much on the net about putting Linux/BSD on them, but I don't see how hard it will be to prep a drive on another machine, and throw it in there. I should be getting mine in the next couple days, I'll let everyone know.

Anyone using one of these? Might be a nice mobile setup.. although without a floppy i'm not sure how you would install NS on it.

Fujitsu Point 510

Mine finally showed up.. this thing rocks. Just needed to install linux onto the drive while it was in another machine, then transplant it back in. Comes in handy, because compiling would be a bitch. However, once it's all together and compiled, it works fine..

I'm using it in in console mode under Slackware with no problems.. Start up Kismet, unplug the keyboard, plug in the gps, and just drive.. easy to read in the car, just plug the keyboard back in when your done.. Should work fine with netstumbler under win95 as well.. (Actually, better because the touchscreen will actually function and you won't need a keyboard..)

If anyone else picks one of these up (there's a TON on ebay now, dirt cheap), let me know if you can get the touchscreen working under linux.. I havn't figured it out yet. Then again, I've only had it for about a day, and spent most of that getting it installed and driving around with it..

One caveat.. The bios doesn't pass memory information correctly for some reason.. Pass "mem=[xx]M" in lilo to get it to work.. Kernel panicked forever on me till I realized what it was...

For Sale.. Above mentioned SBC

If anyone is interested in buying the Advantech unit, its for sale.. It'll incudle the 8 port serial PC104 module, the PCMCIA PC104 module, 64M, a 20G drive, all the cables (HDD, Floppy, Serial, Parrallel, USB, and sound.). It'll also come with a new 15" LCD display. I have not put together the interface for the display, but it should be pretty easy .. I have all the documentation for the display. I can preinstall linux or openbsd if interested.. $450 OBO.. Over $800 invested..

Well.. Not necessarily better, but easier to handle in my car.. The advantech unit was going to do a whole bunch of shit.. Mp3, OBD-II, GPS, CDPD, 802.11, log data off my valentine one, control my PCR-1000 [location specific scanning via gps.. woo]. I have since scrapped that project because of time constraints.. The Fujitsu 510 I got works like a champ for stumbling.. And the other features (being able to run mysql while playing mp3's.. etc) aren't really needed. So.. A 100mhz machine is fine whereas a 300mhz monster embedded system is now overkill.. Great tiny setup tho..

I'm looking at Celeron CPUs with USB, VGA/LCD, Serial, LAN, PCMCIA, IDE, and CF. I can't seem to find the PCMCIA and CF together.

But, here are a few sites that a google search for SBC turns up.

You might want to check the dates before posting next time.

This thread has been finished for over 27 months. It actually is from the original forums, which is why it's all "Guests".
