AP Scanning software (Mandrake Distro)
I was wondering if anyone has knows of any decent Linux Access Point scanning software smiliar to Cirond Corp. 's WINC program that let you browse available accesspoints and if it asks for a key it lets you enter it and connect.
I have found a few programs that shows accesspoints, but none that let me enter a key. Let me know. Thanks Matt |

Why do you need a scanning software that enters a key? If you're just wardrivin', you're not connecting, as connecting to an AP that you don't have permission to is illegal.

Well i am not intending to wardrive, and ofcourse I know its illegal.
That is not the reason I am looking for one. I am looking for something similar to the winc program and what XP has to connect to a encrypted wireless network, that allows me to see the accesspoints and if needed enter a encryption key supplied by the administrator, or if i would go to a coffeeshop for example that supply internet access but they require you to enter a key to access. This mostly to help configuring the wireless network in my laptop easely. Mandrake's wifi configuration is horrible, i have to know the ssid and channel to be able to connect there is nothing that tells me what is available. That is why i am looking for it. |

Uh, dude, you got it backwards. Wardriving is leagle. If you don't know the ssid, then it's probably illeagle to connect to it. Most places that have public ap's have people there to help you.

When using services such as coffee shop WiFi, the service assistants (cake monkeys) will be more thn happy to tell you all the information you require. I'd be surprised if they didn't have it already printed out for you.
Finally, if you enjoy the windows XP way of doing everthing so much, may I suggest you start using windows XP. I think you should definatly do this if you can't connect to an AP via the command line.

Well sorry for asking a question. I do agree that most of the time they do have printed out information.
And I never said I like everything Windows XP does. I rather use my Linux Mandrake workstation. That is why I am looking for a easier gui to configure the wifi. |

use iwconfig. Why bother with a GUI? iwconfig takes all of 3 seconds to use if you have been supplied with the network information.
