bootable linux cd with stumbling tools
hello, Im pretty green when it comes to linux, but im pretty sure this idea of mine is possible and has been done before, but I was hoping that maybe one of the more expierenced linux users out there might help me along : ). Im getting a dell laptop in a week or so, and an orinoco goldcard, and I plan to build an antennae. What i want to do is have a bootable cd with linux installed on it, that will have all of my device drivers, and all of the tools I need for stumbling, pre installed, so that when im out and about with my laptop, or when Ineed to use some software that requires linux, all I have to do is boot up the cd, hopefully it could access my fat partition for log files and such, or maybe it could run using a ram drive? if all im doing is using stumbling tools, 256megs should be plenty then I could save the logs to a floppy and bring them in windows like that, but I think a distro that will access fat would be the best idea, maybe we can make a template distro, then all that other users would have to do, is gather all the drivers they need, and burn it. anybody feeling generous? hehe

Great idea.
It sounds like a wireless option to Trinux. I wonder if the Trinux developers could help out on this. I seem to be having trouble accessing their site from here (work).
Someone email them. www.trinux.org

I emailed fred for wardriving.com and this was his reply
"I have another image that I need to tweak before I post it, then move on to the CD image. I wanted to get the floppy arranged and working with something I have the prism 2 drivers loading from a floppy that has a 2.1 meg root image that loads onto a 8 meg ramdisk. I was planning on making every thing modular. step 1) load the stock kernel disk, step 2) load the drivers that correspond to your card(s) 3) load the software you want to wardrive with. It will all work, I just need to sit down and do it. Tonite I think I'll get the floppy working with the prism or lucent driver and post an image. Then I'll begin work on the cd." hehe cool!

btw someone posted a link for a floppy-base AP on the main stumbler site before:
http://ap.cqure.net/ it booted up fine for me and has prism drivers. i suppose it would be easy to modify this to put on a cd along w/ all your favorite tools. but there are multitudes of other cd and floppy-based linuxes out there too.

check out www.sputnik.com, they have an access point on a bootable cd based on linuxcare.
also check out linuxcare: http://open-projects.linuxcare.com/ I've used it to build demo disks that fit onto a credit card. I was thinking of building a bootable image of kismet would be nice, instead of carrying two laptops. |

Correct link
Here is the corrected link.
http://trinux.sourceforge.net/ I emailed Matthew and asked him if he would support Kismet anytime in the future. I will post a response.

yeah trinux is what those cqure guys are using. sputnik is pretty good too bec it has the drivers on it also for prism.
this weekend, i'll see if i can mod 1 of these builds to boot off cd or floppy w/ kismet. only prob is where to put the logs. still need to mount the hdd on the system for these.
