I've gotten Linux to run on just about every laptop I've installed in on. Except my main laptop at home (Sager 8886). It's got a weird firewire chipset that locks up everytime I try to boot.
If you stick with using an Orinoco card then you shouldn't have a problem getting wireless to work. Hibernate and suspend can be flaky in Linux depending on the mannufacturer. My current laptop only has APM and only so that I can see the battery power and turn the screen off. Sager 8886 - ran without firewire support HP Omnibook - weird issue with screen frequency in X (high pitched noise) Pasonic Toughbook 266mhz - No problems Digital Hinote 1000mhz - No problems The determining factor may be based on what window manager you plan on using KDE and Gnome are memory hungry bastards and the latest versions don't run well on anything below 450mhz and 128mb ram. Something like Blackbox will run great with as little as 32mb
