Has anybody had any experience with usb GPS compatibility under linux?
I found a serial adapter that claims to be linux compatible for $39, but I'd rather go with a usb gps if possible... The reason I want to go USB is because I've got a Sony SR17 running Redhat and I'm using the pcmcia port for my Orinoco Card... There is no serial port or keyboard port(for power), and the only other port free is USB or Firewire(not powered)... Holux usb/serial GPS http://www.thegpsstore.com/cgi-bin/S...32078556
Deluo usb GPS http://www.deluo.com/Merchant2/merch..._Code=GR
I also have a Teletype CF gps which works great with a PC card adapter, so if anyone knows of any CF readers that will translate to serial under linux, please respond here... sPLURge |

Serial/USB adapters
The dude that wrote Kismet recomends the http://www.pfranc.com usb to serial adapter..
I personally would rather have a real serial GPS, since they tend to be from the real "Major" manufacturers, and they have screens, which means that you can use them WITHOUT the laptop. |

I went ahead and ordered a deluo USB GPS, and it works perfectly under redhat7.3... I didn't even have to install or recompile anything...
I plugged it in while watching /var/log/messages, and it instantly configured it as /dev/ttyUSB0. Next I fired up gpsd pointing to that port. with no complaints. Finally fired up kismet and drove around to test it, and used gpsmap to generate a map of APs in my neighborhood... Worked quite nicely... Now the only dilemna I have is whether I want to continue dual booting my laptop... =) sPLURge |
