First, does your bios support booting from a USB device? If it does, then it should work.

If it doesn't and you have a FAT32 file system, then yo could try ZipSlack from slackware. Its a minimal linux install about 100 mb. There is also BigSlack, which is a more full featured version of ZipSlack that takes up about 800 mb.

You might want to do a google for linux on usb. I looked into a while back and have seen mixed results on it.

You could always go hog wild and put linux on a 1GB microdrive in your PCMCIA slot. Then you could have almost any dist you want.

kleptophobiac's suggestion is the most sensible, but I think most of them will occupy two slots... Another option would be to get one of IBM's Travelstar external HDD-to-PCMCIA or similar, you can usually get a small one (<5GB) for well under $50.

As everyone else has pointed out, most systems don't support booting from USB but if yours does, you should have a look at Damn Small Linux. It will need to be hacked to include Kismet and the wireless goodies, but it's under 50MB so there's plenty of room

If you can boot on USB, then why not get a USB CDROM? I've seen older IOMEGAs going for less than a 512 cf card.

Kismet will require pcmcia services, drivers and such depending on you card. There usually a little more effort that unpacking a tarball, and editing conf files depending on your system.

In this respect, the knoppox-STD is nice, but the current release 1b does not have the gpsdaemon running properly.

good question, the answer is no for netstumbler and no drivers (currently) for linux. Cisco, Prism, and Orinoco/Proxim cards work with Kismet.
