Now you that we've had you run all these cryptic commands I figured out a solution. Just place the config files anywhere you can and start kismet with the -f option.

kismet -f /temp/whatever/kismet.conf

hmmm... I created a dmkismet directory and in there I put kismet and also a directory called "conf". Inside "conf" I have kismet.conf and kismet_ui.conf

I type: "./kismet -f /dmkismet/conf/kismet.conf"
I get back:
grep: /usr/local/etc/kismet_ui.conf: no such file or directory
No gui specified in /usr/local/etc/kismet.conf Please specify one!

When I look at the path in the "pretty X windows address bar" it shows the path as...
file:/home/knoppix/tmp/dmkismet/conf

hmmm... I'm not sure kismet knows what -f is... when I type:
./kismet -f /damn/kismet.conf
./kismet -f /home/knoppix/tmp/dmkismet/conf/kismet.conf
./kismet --help
ALL get the same results... strange... I'll keep playing...

Thanks,
Jay

Here's something else, when you type kismet it starts a script that starts kismet server and kismet curses. So what we can do is go into this script and edit where it looks for the kismet_ui.conf.

So open kismet in a text editor, and edit the top and it might work.

OK... I don't think I have the path right...
The original reads:
[/b]gui= 'grep -e "^gui=" $ETC/kismet.conf | cut -d= f2 | tr -d [:space] [/b] this was typed so there may be a small typo somewhere...
but I chaned the first part to:
gui= 'grep -e "^gui=" /conf/kismet.conf ...
it returned a simular error showing:
grep: /conf/kismet_ui.conf: no such file or directory
No gui specified in /usr/local/etc/kismet.conf Please specify one!
so.. the first line of the error shows the /conf/ in there but the second line still shows /usr/local/etc/...
Do you have any kind of instant message program? I see "EveryBuddy" and "Xchat" on this knoppix install.

OK... I can't get "kismet" to take the -f option, however, I can get "kismet_monitor" to accept the -f command and it starts to load. Now the embarassing part. The orinoco card won't go into monitor mode. It appears that I need the .diff file for the orinoco card. I have downloaded the "pcmcia-cs-3.1.34-orinoco-patch-diff" file.
I will dig throught all my notes I've printed off and see what it takes to "apply?" this. Can this be applied to a CD-ROM install?
Question: What is Kismet_monitor? is this the kismet program as we know it, or is this something else?
Thanks everyone,
-Jay

kismet_monitor is the script that puts the card into monitor mode.

if it isn't ran, the card doesn't go into that mode as the error has shown you.

also...you may need to flash down your orinoco card (down to 6.something)

Go JAY Go !!!

Sounds like you are sooo close to finally getting a bootable Linux CD working with Kismet...especially with Knoppix 3.1, this should be sweet when you finally get it all working.

Are you already at firmware 6.06 or 6.16?

The source to Gulpit has been released so you can just grab that and have a cdrom Kismet.
