Kismet not running on RH9 with Orinoco Silver

I need help...

I am running RH9 with an Orinoco Silver Card. I followed Tipsybottle's instruction but when I run Kismet, i get the error below. I logged in as root and ran kismet_monitor -H before loging out and login back in as a user.

Any pointers?

[manolito@localhost manolito]$ kismet
Server options: none
Client options: none
Starting server...
Will drop privs to manolito (500)
No enable sources specified, all sources will be enabled.
Source 0 (Kismet): Using pcap to capture packets from eth0
FATAL: Source 0 (Kismet): pcap reported netlink type 1 (EN10MB) for eth0. This
probably means you're not in RFMON mode or your drivers are reporting a bad value. Make sure you have run kismet_monitor.
Starting UI...
FATAL: Could not connect to localhost:2501.
Terminating...
Done. Run kismet_unmonitor or eject and re-insert your card (or restart your
pcmcia services) to return your card to normal operation.

2nd Question:
When I type Kismet_monitor -H... why does it read that I am using a Cisco card when I have an Orinoco??

[manolito@localhost /]$ kismet_monitor -H
Will launch kismet_hopper
Using /usr/local/etc/kismet.conf sources...
Enabling monitor mode for a cisco card on eth0
/usr/local/bin/kismet_monitor: line 135: iwconfig: command not found
/usr/local/bin/kismet_monitor: line 136: /proc/driver/aironet/eth0/Config: No such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/kismet_monitor: line 137: /proc/driver/aironet/eth0/Config: No such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/kismet_monitor: line 138: /proc/driver/aironet/eth0/Config: No such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/kismet_monitor: line 139: ifconfig: command not found
Cisco cards use an internal channel hopper, disabling kismet_hopper.

maybe you should..

Try again read the howto word for word. Install all the packages in the howto. I am also running rh9 w/ orinoco. I had my problems when I just skimmed thru it. did a fresh install with the howto printed in hand and everything works like a charm.

It looks like you neglected to edit kismet.conf, do 'man kismet' and read what it has to say.

You guys were right. I needed to read the HowTo carefully. I only edited the suiduser and forgot the logtemplate and source.

I made those changes but now when I run kismet_monitor -H as root ( since I am new to Linux.. should I run it in /root or / ?) I ran it in both and it does not seem to be working.

Any other pointers?

You'll need to run the commands from a directory that your suiduser has write privs in. One option is to cd to /home/*whatever* and run from there.

It shouldn't matter where you run it from provided your path is set appropriately (root's _should_ be).

Re-post the output from kismet_monitor -H (perhaps also try kismet_monitor on it's own too to exclude the possibility that the hopper is screwing something up).

Smile

Thank You very much for everyone's help . I have finally got it to work.

I took "thefly" advice and ran kismet_monitor without -H and it seemed to have loaded. Then I ran kismet as a user and it too loaded and voila it has appeared to have worked. It did not get anything as the hopper was not working but never-the-less it seemed to look like it worked.

After that, in root I tried kismet_monitor -H and for some strange reason(???- honestly, I did nothing different than from last night when I was pulling my hair out ). . .well, embrassed to say that it worked. It said it was in monitor mode and then I logged in as a user and ran kismet and it came up and detected my own AP as it was on channel 6. I saved the log and used ethereal and I am one happy Wardriver!!! Too bad its midnight or else I would be driving out to test it out

One other question. . . when Kismet was running and I tried to run Mozilla (and of course try to go to the Netstumbler site and post my joys) it did not connect to the server? Is that normal since I am using the card in monitor mode? After I was done using Kismet, I did a kismet_unmonitor followed by service pcmcia restart and then I was able to get to the net. Just wondering if that was normal???

Next step is for me to format my laptop and start from a clean install and try the whole things again without any notes. You know what they say about Learning . . .Repetition is the motherhood of learning....or something like that... great practice to get my teeth into Linux. So far I have to say that I do like Linux

Thanks again to everyone.

Hey well done!

Your notes about not being able to connect to networks and kismet_unmonitor, etc are EXACTLY correct. In monitor mode the card can only collect packets, not communicate.

Wow! A newbie that's willing to take the time to do it all over again.. more power to you lad!

Here's another free tip. Try upping the channel hopping rate. Default is 3 channels per second but we've found if you double that it helps somewhat. (Perhaps you might wanna try that _after_ getting it all working)

Cool

Coolio !!!!

I formated and re-installed Linux then Kismet and it still works !!! Yippeeee!!!!

Tomorrow I will make the Pringles cantenna and see if that works. I bought an antenna from Signull and that is pretty cool too but I would like to make one just for the sake of bragging that I was able to make one

Does anyone know how to get 1024 x 768 resolution on my IBM T20 with the Savage IX 8mb card? I have been searching for the past week to solve this problem. Currently I only have 800 x 600 and it kinda sucks when I load up ethereal

I had trouble figuring out how to change the resolution too. I kept trying to manually set the resolution of X windows to 1024x768, but that didn't work.

The solution is to change the probed configuration of the monitor. Modify the settings to specify a generic monitor with the resolution of 1024x768.

System Settings -> Display, Advanced Tab, Under Monitor Type Select Configure, Select Generic -> Generic Laptop Display Panel 1024x768.

Cool

Ritchie. . . you ROCK !!!!

I tried your suggestion and it worked. It was so simple. I have been trying to upgrade to a higher version of Xfree86 and patching the savage IX card but they have all failed for me. Partly because I probably do not know what I am doing.

In case you are interested, this was the link that I was using http://www.probo.com/timr/savagemx.html

Thanks again buddy
