Kismet Power readings with Orinoco
Sometimes when I use gpsmap to try to draw a power interpolated map it says that there are no power readings in the .gps file I'm using.
I thought this had to do with the "iwpriv eth<n> monitor <mode> <channel>." I was using "iwpriv eth0 monitor 2 6" which means, according to http://airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html, set eth0 into monitor mode with results returned in ARPHRD_IEEE80211 packets. I got an error with gpsmap as stated above, so I tried to use "iwpriv eth0 monitor 1 6" with returns the monitor mode results in ARPHRD_IEEE80211_PRISM packets. I was figuring that the power information was part of the PRISM packets. I haven't yet read the actual packet structures (so a RTFM is appropriate here I guess). So at first the files had power information, but my latest drive doesn't have power information. My question is, which setting is correct for gathering power information along with the networks or is it just an alignment of the planets thing? |

From what I've found I would say it's the 'iwpriv eth0 monitor 1 6'.
"Basically, the 802.11 frame doesn't contain any kind of signal strength info or whatnot; that's purely dependant on the hardware." |

Maybe it has something to do with orinoco_hopper, the other day I was having all kinds of problems with it, causing Kismet to detect imaginary APs with no channels or SSIDs. What happens if you run it with the -p option and without?

In yet another twist... orinoco_hopper with -p works with kismet-devel, but gives me bogus networks with kismet-2.2.2 (like the scanning speed is wrong). The settings are the same for everything else. This is sort of ok because gpsmap in -devel is way cooler, however kismet2cwgd is broken in -devel so I can't convert my files for upload to http://www.wigle.net. There's always something isn't there? I might just sit down and try to fix kismet2cwgd tonight, I guess that's what I get for running -devel, but it really aught to work with -2.2.2. Then again it might not be the scanning speed, I didn't rebuild -2.2.2, I just make installed it. Ideas are welcome...

So, even with -devel, the -p option seems to slow down the scanning a lot, I got about 20 less networks than usual. It could just be "natural conditions". That would seriously suck if in order to get power readings you had to give up a significant number of networks. I think it's time for a clean reinstall and see what happens.

I just grabbed the devel yesterday and it comes with it's own hopper, I haven't really had a chance to try it yet, I don't believe it uses the -p option. One annoying thing is it isn't drawing my screen correctly.
