I'm running knopix on an IBM thinkpad 770x and it works very well. I have a dell truemobile 1150 running the 8.72 firmware. The sound doesn't work and I can't seem to get the orinoco drivers correct. I can connect to our office wlan but can't run kismet.

Holly crap, I have this EXACT setup. Same laptop and card!!

Works fine on my system, as for the sound took awhile to get it working at least in my mandrake 9.1 install, You have to go into the BIOS and turn off the quick boot.

You need to run the patched orinoco drivers before kismet will work.

I'm curious what problems you've been having with the Orinoco drivers.

According to the page, the patched drivers are in there. I'm looking at using the STD distro to finally get kismet running. It's the major project in the next couple days, just wanting to know what stumbling (bad pun!) blocks you might have run into.

Problems I'm having:

tried lots of things to install the patched drivers. Be warned, I haven't ever done anything like this before. (I am usually happy with a basic linux install) Monitor mode would not work. Getting the no private ioctls in kismet and when running iwpriv I do not see monitor listed. However, I have decided to try another route. I just reinstalled with pcmcia kernel support turned off. (I'm trying to avoid recompiling the kernel) and I'm going to install pcmcia-cs-3.2.1 and the orinoco patched drivers now.

Please note: I am open to other ideas if you have any. It's easy for me to reinstall. I am enjoying all the learning I am doing.

I am very interested in the solution for sound support. If anyone has any links.

Thanks! JF

Read my commants above regarding the sound.

As for the drivers, I have the EXACT I mean the EXACT setup and I have no issues.
Try and do this, as root:

# ifconfig <eth1 or eth0> down

Then install the patched drivers.

For a quick test, pop the wifi card out, then wait a sec or two, pop it back in, then you should see the LED come on, do the :

# iwpriv

and see if it's working

The PCI card on your desktop might not work under Linux. Linksys changed the chipset in v2.7 of the WMP11 (to Broadcom I believe...) it's unsupported.

As for the kernel issue, it's really not too difficult if you take your time and read all the "help" docs, and it's well worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to try this in a few minutes. IIRC, the card was in at all times but, I did restart for other reasons at some point. I'm learning quite a bit about creating custom kernels as well. I'm running a dell truemobile 1150 with the 8.72 (i think) firmware but I have the utilities to change that. I also have a brand new orinoco b/g card from work I was going to try.

Thanks again!

After some screwing around this weekend I got Kismet running on Knoppix-STD.

ifconfig eth0 (or 1) down
patch-orinoco
kismet-init
kismet-edit
kismet

And I get Kismet showing my test network which is more than I've gotten before.

The real problem now is channel hopping. The Distro has Orinoco-hopper installed, but whenever I run it, I get zilch detected.

I've got the impression that the card is not actually in Monitor mode, even after patching the drivers. Any way to manually throw the card into monitor mode?

You can put it in monitor mode manually with 'iwpriv eth0 monitor 2 1'.

FYI, I did get the card working in monitor mode. I put both my flashed truemobile and my new orinoco silver (2days old loaner from work) in the slots, configured the lang and screen, booted and tested knoppix from the cd. Worked fine! then I loaded it to the hard drive and it kept all the settings this time. I have no idea why it didn't work that way before but I am glad it works now. Thanks for all the help!

Oh and, Kismet /monitor mode only works with the truemobile card not the orinoco. but that's fine.
