Knoppix-STD, Kismet, Laptop =Confused

I am wanting to setup a dualboot laptop with linux(dont know which distro yet) and Windows XP and I have been reading about live CD`s so to err on the side of caution I downloaded Knoppix-STD to give it a go.

I`ve managed to get Kismet to work with my built in WiFi card but I have to run Wellenreiter first then close it down or Kismet wont work and when it is working all I get is a list of SSID`s but nothing else.

I`m thinking that my WiFi card has something to do with this and I`m waiting for my Orinico Gold to arrive as I write will i get more features when I run the gold card?

How the fuck should we know that ? Especially when you haven't bothered to give us any info about your current card... The quality of help you get is equal to the quality of the information you provide about your problem.
The information you provided is SEVERELY lacking in quality..

Sorry the WiFi card is an Intersil PRISM Wireless Lan PCI card using the drivers that came with the laptop.

When I run wellenreiter it does not pick up my AP or anything else but in order to get Kismet to work I have to run it first.

I think you'll find it's using the drivers that came with knoppix-std.

Which linux drivers are you using with the internal card ? I'm certain that if you are using the drivers for windows which came with the laptop, under ndiswrapper, you won't be able to enter monitor mode, which is required by Kismet.

Read the documentation in usr/share/doc/linux-wlan-ng if you are using those drivers, or in usr/share/doc/hostap* if you are using those drivers.

I`m using the drivers that are on the STD disc I tried looking in usr/share/doc/linux-wlan-ng and hostap but there is no file or directory.

What has confused me is Kismet will scan only after I run Wellenreiter which won`t or doesn`t seem to work at all. If I try to run Kismet first it starts to load (I don`t know what it says as it goes to fast to read) it closes itself.

Did you copy to the ramdisk, then edited the kismet.conf and kismet_ui.conf files to contain the correct capture source, then start kismet with -f pointing to the edited conf files ?

Do a "man kismet.conf" & "man kismet_ui.conf" for more information.
Do a "dmesg | less" to see which drivers are loaded for the card.

No I don`t know how to do this.

I think I need to do more reading as at the moment I`m unsure what it all means.

I`m guessing on this one I get init_modulerism2_pci.0: 0.2.0 loaded
init_module:dev_info is rism2 pci no devices found, driver not installed are what I`m looking for?

AFAIK Knoppix-STD works like regular Knoppix, which means your home directory is on the ramdisk. Copy the "kismet.conf" and "kismet_ui.conf" from /etc/kismet to the home directory, edit it, and then use the -f parameter to tell kismet to use those edited conf files. AFAIR Midnight Commander (a Norton Commander clone) is included on knoppix-std.
mc <enter> at the prompt should get it going.

Man is the standard way of including documentation in linux. Do a "man kismet", "man kismet.conf" and "man kismet_ui.conf" to see the help pages for kismet.

As for your card, it doesn't look like it's recognised, you may need to load the drivers manually with insmod. Check the wlan-ng and the hostap sites (google is your friend) to find out if your card is supported.

I`m going slightly out of my depth here I`ll have to learn how to use Midnight Commander can you explain why when I run wellenrieter close it down and run Kismet it works with my built in card?

One more thing will I have these problems with my Gold Card?

If you don't know what the "man" command is you'll probably be out of your depth on a lot of this. Just a suggestion, but you may want to get an book on basic Unix commands.

I'm pretty sure the knoppix-std disk is configured to use a cisco card. I'll have to fire it up when I'm at my pc lappy later and see. So you'll still have to configure the card. I think there's a network config menu in there somewhere too. That might help out a lot. The reason that it works after wellenreiter is because wellenreiter has an autoconfigure script in it. Wellenreiter is almost as good as kismet, may as well us that if it works.

I would try Auditor over Knoppix STD, It will work out of the box with a prism card, and is a bit more up to date.
