linux in a window
Hi everyone, IM a total newbie when it comes to linux but im going to jump in soon and start learning it. Id like to be able to use some of the other stumbling programs out there like kismet and some of the other linux utilites...
I have a spare computer at home im going to eventually turn into a linux box but id like to get some functionality out of my laptop for on the road.. heres the question: I found winlinux 2001 www.winlinux.net and it seem like a small flavor of linux that installs into windows. instead of partitioning my drive and installing redhat or some other flavor ( I may do that after ive had more experience on the desktop test 'puter). would I have any problems running the linux stumbling utilities on such a small build? could they be run simultaniously as netstumbler?? My laptop is XP-Pro, 512mb, p4 2.2Ghz opinions? |

Hi Bullwinkle,
it is perfectly possible to use such a small installation. I use a 170 MB Vectorlinux-Installation on my laptop. (I wrecked my SuSE-Installation one day and was to lazy rebuilding ist). BUT: If you are a newby, missing packages which you possibly need for compiling or installing some programs can drive you mad. When you are a experienced Linux user you just install the missing packages. As a beginner you possibly despair. It is easier to learn with a full blown installation, but hey, just give it a try. |

Linux in a window
If you plan on running your stumbling programs on/in
the linux window, they may not work... As I remember The drivers require exclusive access to the hardware, and if you are running this setup in a linux window under Windows, it won't have direct acces it needs to the Wi-Fi card. This is the same reason linux sniffing tools such as Kismet and Netstumbler will also not work on a Guest OS under VMWare. ![]() |
