Netstumbler for Linux

Is there a package to download for Linux?

Or is Kimset the way to go?

NS is win32. Get Kismet. There are others wardriving programs for Linux, too. Search around.

Kismet is far better than netstumbler in features, and in the fact that it's passive.

There's no reason not to use kismet.

Kismet is pretty good! You will pick up a lot more AP's with it being passive....

Well, its only passive if you tell it to be. There are still probe packets unless you turn them off. I love kismet, I just wish the interface were a bit prettier, to match the gtk airsnort and ethereal that I also have on screen.

I also wish that it measured in DBm rather than that funny scale... which goes from zero to 130 (when I'm pointing my 31 db dish right at it from across the room)

No, there are no probe packets by default. Unless you have your card in monitor mode, kismet will not work. Monitor mode disables the card from sending probe packets.

Actually, some cards can send packets while in monitor mode (Cisco). I wouldn't rely on the fact that a card is in monitor mode as a guarantee that it is passive.

how do I put my card in monitor mode. I am running Red-Hat 8.0 with the Orinoco Gold card. The card seems to be working. It is active and the lights are blinking. Everytime I try and run Kimset it says your card is not in monitor mode.

Thanks

Can you recommend any sites for Linux newbies thar will help me understand unpacking files and installing them.

Have you patched the orinoco driver with the monitor mode patch?? Do an iwpriv eth1 (eth1 being your interface for the orinoco card). The last line should be monitor. If so all you need to do is run kismet_monitor -H as root before launching kismet.

Yes, this is a known problem with some of the cisco cards. This is not actually true monitor mode, which is why this cannot apply. The ciscos were built this way, and anyone with a cisco should have already read up on the dangers of using one with Kismet or at all while wardriving.
