New Kismet version available - 2005-01-R1

From the website (http://www.kismetwireless.net/)

Sat Jan 15 2005 - Released 2005-01-R1.

Not the major rewrite yet, sorry, just pushed out for the CHIP magazine compilation CD. Minor bugfixes and general updates, including non-intel/non-linux compilation issues from old stray headers, gcc version issues that crept in, ipw2100 tweaks to try to minimize the drivers returning error codes, tweaked signal/noise handlers to report with Madwifi again, rudimentary Atmel-USB support, tweaked configure scripts, patches to fix gpsmap behavior on new imagemagick libs, and spelling fixups in scripts and the readme.

This isn't the "New Core" release is it?

Say Apr 02 2005 - Release 2005-04-R1. Mostly bugfixes to IP handling, gpsmap, compiling, and card channel control, but also new features like WPA/TKIP/LEAP/EAP/TLS detection, and rt2x00 card support. All users are reccomended to upgrade.
This whole April Fools new version thing is going to make me go nuts! I don't know if I can believe them!

This one is not an Aprils Fool joke. Has been in the Dev tree for the last couple of days. Seems like Mike decided it was stable enough to become the new Upstream release. Check the changelog, and you can see that the WPA detection was available already the 10'th of march in the Dev tree.
Note though, that it is still not the New Core release. That is still progressing in its own branch.

Actually, you could get around that, if your wired networkcard for the laptop supports PXE booting. Boot the Knoppix CD-Rom on another machine on the network, make the bootfloppy (or transfer it to a USB key, if the laptop can boot from that), and then boot from the floppy, and then continue the boot over the network from the running Knoppix Live CD on the other machine
Have had to install knoppix to harddisk in this manner (usb-key), on a modern lightweight notebook, without CD-rom and floppy disk.
Found the howto on the knoppix.net forums AFAIR.

BTW, For those using Debian, or deriatives thereof, a .deb package of the new upstream release, should be forthcoming pretty soon :

For the info of Debian users, the 2005-04-R1 version has been debianized, and is currently making its way into the Unstable distribution repositories. Find it at your local mirror within the next couple of days :

Interesting,

new version of Kismet compiles nicely under openbsd and slackware, but fails on cygwin right off the bad complaining of a missing '(' in util.cc

Any other cygwin users care to confirm?

http://www.kismetwireless.net/Forum/General/ would be a better place to ask...

P.S. Because you started the thread that enabled the Evil Quartet to do their thing, I've posted it there for ya. Will keep you updated on any responses...
