openWRT v4 router what the...?
Well I got Cygwin/kismet going on my laptop, well atleast I 'assume' it works. I went and bought a new WRT54G router v4 because my old one is running far too many things for me to want to transfer it all. Well the FIRST one I bought the firmware upgrade worked, no problem first try. (never got a chance to put kismet on the openwrt and test it) Well my friend bought it off me for the sake of also wanting to play with the whole linux on linksys thing. So I went and bought another one... Well this one wont upgrade the damn firmware, despite 20+ attempts and trying every thing I could think of... resetting it with the hardware button, resetting it from the browser I just cant get OPENwrt to install on it. It will go about 70% then restart and when it gets to about the same spot the second time it just says 'install are fail' or some thing... I tried to downgrade the firmware version thinking it was a v4 loader problem but lo and behold! The same damn problem. Linksys doesnt even want its own software, Im really stumped. Sorry to bother everyone with this but any help would be greatly appreciated. If any else had this problem and fixed it? I dont know, thanks a lot in advance. by the way the firmware version at this time is 4.20.6 (newest)

Are you using the web control on the firmeware or tftp? I'd try tftp.
I have'nt seen a v4 router yet (does it say wrt54g v4 on the sticker on the bottom?) and it might be incompatible with openwrt or the new hardware/firmware might have something to block other firmwares. doublecheck everything and try TFTP

Are you attempting firmware upgrades over the wireless or wired?
And are you sure it's a v4 of that model? I don't see a v4 on Linksys' website.

Yeah the sticker on the bottom says 'WRT54G v4' I have not tried tftp yet... well I did but not with this new router, let me give that a try. No never over wireless too unstable for an action that must remain constant. The v4's are really strange they have a Cisco System light/button on the front for... well Im not sure I havent read the user guide (besides the part on upgrading firmware that stated the obvious...) but if you see one you will know it. Too much extra b/s for me.

No go on tftp keeps telling me Error on server : Invalid Password!! even tried to remove the password all together...
Wow that is really odd I cant find it on their web site either, if you go to support and downloads however, you can find it in their. Wireless routers, WRT54G and then it has the v4 model its not really 'on their website' as far as like what they consider having out but with a little digging you can find it... Sounds like they made changes to that model that openWRT isn't compatible with, and it sounds as though you're the proud owner of a brick.
I believe the openWRT site says what models of the router their firmware is compatible with, you probably shouldn't have tried it with that model.

It still works fine, once the upgrade fails I just cycle the power and its fine again every thing is just as I left it. However, it just doesnt serve the purpose of what I want to use it for sadly. Yeah, I didnt see it on their list but I figured I would give it a try. I do own a WRT54GS but the situation with that is, its routing and redirecting every port slot it has available and its all configured nice and neat... Really dont want to convert every thing on my S over the this standard G. However v4 does have some REALLY great features for common users if any one wants to check it out. It acts kind of like a hardware firewall with Symantec client built into it(60 day trial of some thing), it has some thing called Secure easy setup, as well as A LOT of extra features the other ones dont have. I think the CISCO systems light/button like syncs it to other routers on your network. Also Office Depot (maybe other places) are offering a $20 rebate on them. $70 or $50 after mail in.

I googled this problem a little harder... like I should have done in the first place, for this I appologize deeply but I did find answers to any one who cares. Im sure people buying new routers will keep running into the same problems but openwrt does support the v4 router now... so their link said. I havent tried it yet, but Im about to so here is the link for te WRT54g v4 bin if any one is interested. Thanks for the help guys.
http://downloads.openwrt.org/people/nbd/whiterussian/ Eh also sorry, didnt know that v3.1 already supported the Secure Easy Setup Works fine, Im writing you this on my v4 openwrt router, if you have a v4 use the patched version from the link above and every thing should be fine. Wow, thanks a lot, really good info in that second link. Well v4 does seem to be having a problem although I see it as minor right now. It seems that vi goes insane when I try to edit a file on openwrt. When I first enter vi there are no problems, but then once I start editing... well I dont even start honestly. I type one thing and it throughs my curser into a random spot and then no matter what I push it just keeps telling me Im editing lines... I dont know. I ran the vi tutor in cygwin to get a general understanding on vi before I started but I dont remember any thing like this...

When I suggested TFTP I meant using a linux command line version, not the proprietary linksys utility.

My bad. If you had'nt been able to set boot_wait yet, normal tftp would'nt work.

No problem, ah I see what youre saying now, Yeah every thing went fine openwrt is all loaded up and working, I just cant edit the kismet_drone.conf file. I use vi to edit it and when I get into vi I can move around fine but when I start editing a line, it will let me type one letter and it will through the curser into a random spot and then wont let me do any thing and keep telling me Im editing lines...

Alright I ran into a new problem now, every thing went fine up to this point...
after I issue all of the wl commands and the chmod command (they all work fine) I get to the /usr/bin/./kismet_drone -f /etc/kismet_drone.conf command and when I issue you it it fails. root@openwrt:/# /usr/bin/./kismet_drone -f /etc/kismet_drone.conf Using alternate config file: /etc/kismet_drone.conf Suid priv-dropping disabled. This may noy be secure. No specified sources given to the be enabled, all will be anabled. Disabling channel hopping. Source 0 (wrt54g): Enabling monitor mode for wrt54g source interface eth2 channel 0... Source 0 (wrt54g): Opening wrt54g source interface eth2... FATAL: ioctl: No such device In renders tutorial it says to do this Copy /tmp/kismet-2005-08-R1-wrt54/kismet_drone into /usr/bin/kismet_drone and /tmp/kismet-2005-08-R1-wrt54/kismet_drone.conf into /etc/kismet_drone.conf well when I was going through it all the conf. file is not located there its located in /tmp/kismet-2005-08-R1-wrt54*/conf/*kismet_drone.conf I dont know if that matters but I just changed it to redirect it there, but I edited the conf file exactly how it said to do so in the tutorial using the v3 suggestions (Since there is no 4) |
