Question Orinoco driver install error

I'm trying to get Kismet installed on a Tosbiba Tecra under RH 9.

I'm following the instructions I got from Tipsy Bottle. When installing the Orinoco drivers, the patch and make went well, but I get the following errors when doing make install:
(as root)
Quote:
[root@localhost orinoco-0.13b]# make install
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
for f in hermes.o orinoco.o orinoco_cs.o orinoco_plx.o orinoco_pci.o; do \
if test -e /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/$f; then \
install -m 644 -o 0 -g 0 $f /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/pcmcia/$f; \
else \
install -m 644 -o 0 -g 0 $f /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/$f; \
fi; \
done
if [ -d /etc/pcmcia ]; then install -m 644 -o 0 -g 0 hermes.conf /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf; fi
depmod -a
make: depmod: Command not found
make: *** [install] Error 127
(as me)

I chown from root to me, then tried make install again - no joy.

I verified that depmod is in the /sbin directory, vith valid permissions.

What else can I do to get this working? Any help is much appreciated.

When I installed my driver(in Mandrake 9.1) I did the whole thing as root. None of that chown or anything like that.

I did all the steps as root. Worked for me.

Doh! {slaps himself in the head}
Didn't try that... I was hoping I could run it without always being root.

Thanks for the tip - I re-did the tar and patch, then ran make and make install. It worked.

Ran dmesg and saw no eth1 files - only eth0 for a Xircom nic.

Pulled the Xircom and dropped the ORiNOCO in that slot. Ran dmesg again and found the ORiNOCO card.
# iwpriv eth0
and saw monitor was one of the available ioctl listed.

Now let's see what else I can crash...
