Orinoco monitor mode hangs after few mins

I am running SimplyMepis3.3 with a 2.6.9 kernel patched from the files found on kismetwireless. Using an Orinoco Silver card.

When I issue the command "iwpriv ethx monitor 1 y" followed by airodump to sniff, after several minutes it stops logging packets.

When I use kismet, it lasts a bit longer (less than an hour) and then hangs.

It seems to be an Orinoco problem. I've had this problem in the past on other laptops. Any ideas what it could be? Is there a recommended firmware level for the Orinoco silver card?

Thanks.

The recommended firmware level for Gold is 8.10. I've used it without issue with firmware 8.72. What version/patch of the driver are you using?
The newer .15 is not as stable and it's not recommended to use the earlier .13e dragorn patch is the best option.

Have you looked at the logs for error messages?

Why not use Alchemy to make your Silver card a Gold card?

about the 0.15 drivershttp://netstumbler.org/showthread.php?t=13749

Actually, I am using an Orinoco Silver card.

I applied the patch built for the 2.6.9 kernel, which apparently is not the 0.13e patch. Do you think this is the problem?

What advantage would I see by upgraded my silver to gold? Will that allow me to sniff 128-bit WEP?

Thanks.

Yes, and yes.
Mike recommends 0.13e drivers and patch for Kismet usage.
Check the "Silver to gold" thread here on the forum, for more information about the advantages of updating the card. (Use the Search function, to find the thread.)

I've never picked strawberries. I've picked potatoes as a kid but not strawberries.
