Which OS

I was planning on trying to use kismet. Knoppix 3.2 did not boot on my laptop, and I have not tried the 3.3 update. I was wondering if kismet would work with my hardware.

Redhat will no longer be supporting their 7,8, and 9, so that's why I downloaded the ISOs for fedora.

I got mandrake 9.2 & 9.1 redhat 9, fedora core 1, and knoppix 3.2. I was wondering which OS I should use in a dual boot with xp, if the 3.3 update doesn't work on my computer.

Also I was wondring where I could find drivers and client managers for my hardware.

Hardware: Dell 2650, Garmin Emap, IO Gear GUC232A usb to serial adaptor, and a dell truemobil 1150.

Thanks in advance,
Ben

I currently dual boot between 2000 and Redhat 8 (setup using this guide). My knowledge of linux is quite low so I have found redhat to be good for the job.

Wow, that site is incredible!

I found that rh9 should work with my usb to serial adaptor, and if not, I found a list of packages to use.

That covers it. Thanks A Lot!

I use Fedora, and followed that same Kismet guide, works like a champ. Nice thing was, Fedora supported my USB-serial adapter right off the bat, but RH9 needed a recompile for it.

You could always try topologilinux

I have been messing around with it but have yet to get kismet running on it (I haven't had time). It's based off of slack 9.1. Cheers.

I use Fedora, GPSDrive, and Kismet using a Linksys WPC55AG (802.11A/B/G). In one word: Outstanding! I can't use Netstumbler, primarily because it doesn't run on Linux. Kismet works great for checking the security of our wireless systems among other things.

Sweet, I'm gonna install Fedora... I used to run RedHat and everything worked great, then I switched to Gentoo... awesome OS, but I COULD NEVER GET THE FREAKING GPS TO WORK RIGHT... works like a breeze with Redhat, so I'm excited... I've been out of the loop for a while.

Fedora is incredibly easy to use and setup. Got it up and running in about 20 min. I only got a couple of problems. The first is that after it goes into graphical mode (boots into gnome), if you switch to a text terminal (ctrl + alt + 2), the screen just stays black, and you never get the chance to login (atleast that I can see). I tried several different graphic options like resolution, set the refresh rate to 60, and tried switching the monitor between generic lcd 1024 and dell lcd 1024 monitors. The only option I havn't tried is the un-probed monitor.

Also, I kinda ran into a brick wall when I tried to install the HostAp drivers. Where it asks for the kernel path, I was wondering which path to use. I have the i686 and the most recent kernel. I am going to skip this part, and see how it goes, because it says it is optional. If you need more info to solve my problem, I will have to look it up and give it to you (if I even need the HostAP).... I am in windows right now typing this.

Thanks again

Are you asking for help? If so you are being extremely vague. Not getting a login prompt when switching to a virtual terminal via CTRL+ALT+F1 sounds like it could be a video card issue but you don't mention anything about your hardware. I'm also not sure what you are doing regarding the "HostAp" thing.

I might suggest you post a message on my Fedora forums with a detailed list of your hardware and specifically what you are having trouble with and we can probably get to the bottom of any Fedora issues you are having... Just a suggestion.

Fedora uses something called firstboot which prevents that... google it, I came across it earlier today when looking for something else.

Sorry about the vague post, I was going out of town, and was running late.

Ok, I got my monitor problem fixed. All I had to do was to set the monitor option in the BIOS to LCD only. If it is in simultanious mode, it won't work.

Ok, I found out that the shmoo drivers didn't install properly. When I typed dmesg, they weren't in there, and then when I started kismet, it said the drivers weren't patched.

I am going to try to re-install them tonight. If anyone else tried installing using the tipsybottle method and solved these problems fixed, please tell me.

The "tipsybottle method" ha - For some reason that cracks me up. I guess I got really tipsy last weekend at a couple holiday parties.

Anyway...

I installed fedora about a month ago and ran into the same hostap problems. I guess I forgot this problem until this posting (I've been busy at work). I just reverted back to the Orinoco_cs drivers anyway. Plus I got a new a/b/g card I've been messing around with.

I'll try to find a solution tonight as well and update the Kismet HowTo. I saw some similar problems when I did a quick google.

Hey, I noticed a couple of problems along the lines of dependencies... can't remember off the bat what it was though, I'll let you know when I have more time.

"if you can't figure out how to install kismet using the tipsybottle HOWTO, you shouldn't be using linux" LOL, I am linux + certified!

After several weeks, I finally got kismet working with fedora.

I had lots of problems, with GPSDrive, ImageMagick, Perl Libraries, and the STUPID IOGEAR USB TO SERIAL ADAPTOR. There are too many people to give all names mention, but thanks to everyone for all of your help.
