Redhat 8.0 and wireless stuff

Hello,

Wondering if anyone had taken the time to install RH 8 and try to set up Kismet with a Cisco or Lucent card. I'm in the process of downloading and would like to know what I'm getting myself into.

Thanks in advance

Seeing as how it came out today, I'd say you are one of the first. I have no plans to upgrade anytime soon (from 7.3) because the changelog reveals nothing more than a new window manager and package updates (correct me if I'm wrong)....

Tell us how it goes!

http://www.redhat.com/software/linux.../packages.html

has no mention of Kismet....

and it still has kernel 2.4.18 {though probably heavily patched with RH updates and quirks}

but there are quite a few software updates that would make a difference... {hopefully making installing kismet a little bit easier}

gcc 3.2, GTK2, KDE 3.0.3,PCMCIA 3.1.31

so... I too will be waiting before updating my ehem... customized system... :-)

Running RH8

I have just installed RH8.......Orinoco card works great and the new wireless profile mgr is nice. My Prisim II card is having issues, I can ping other wireless clients but not the 802.3 clients.

IBM 600e Laptop
Orinoco Gold (works great)
LeArtery Prism II (still working on)

Next steep is to install kismet

Did the ORiNOCO work without messing with it at all?

i have seen something w/ redhat and orinoco...

for some reason, in 8.0, the drivers do not seem to be modules, like in 7.3, they now seem to be built into the kernel...
the only way i found to fix this was to recompile w/ oinoco support as modules, then install the patched drivers.. otherwise, it don't load the right stuff.. then u get no monitor command... and, no kismet / airsnort...

someone correct me if i'm wrong..

I ran compiled pcmcia-cs-3.1.34 and patched it. Now I can see support for monitor when i run iwpriv eth1. When I try to run iwpriv eth1 2 1 I get an error message that I don't have permision, yet I am logged in as root. Any Ideas??????

Installed redhat 8.0 this morning. My orinoco card worked immediately, connecting to my AP with little effort - but I can't get it into monitor mode to run Kismet.

EDIT still need to try the shmoo patch.

I installed RH8 on my Dell Inspiron 8100 and it works like a champ. Comes with Ethereal.. I compiled Kismet and installed it but it doesnt seem to work.. it's configured correctly says the driver says 1 or incorrect driver... but yet the wireless drivers are working for my card.. I have a Dell TrueMobile 1150 and what is the shmoo patch?
