The Shmoo patch is what makes monitor mode work.

It appears that the Orinoco Patch does not work with RedHat 8.0 as it did with 7.x. I am having the same installation issues as TiGuy and others. Here was my installation process:
1) RedHat 8.0 Installation
2) Remove RedHat pcmcia-cs
3) Install pcmcia-cs 3.2.1 with Orinoco patch
4) Remove extra RedHat copies of orinoco_cs.o, hermes.o, etc.

It appears that the driver has been successfully installed when I check dmesg and iwpriv.

# iwpriv eth1
eth1 Available private ioctl :
force_reset (8BE0) : set 0 & get 0
card_reset (8BE1) : set 0 & get 0
set_port3 (8BE2) : set 1 int & get 0
get_port3 (8BE3) : set 0 & get 1 int
set_preamble (8BE4) : set 1 int & get 0
get_preamble (8BE5) : set 0 & get 1 int
set_ibssport (8BE6) : set 1 int & get 0
get_ibssport (8BE7) : set 0 & get 1 int
monitor (8BE8) : set 2 int & get 0

But I am unable to place the card in monitor mode…

# iwpriv eth1 monitor 2 11
Interface doesn't accept private ioctl...
monitor (8BE8): Operation not permitted

I’ve gone through the same installation numerous times in RedHat 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3, but it doesn’t install as smoothly in 8.0.

Rambopfc, were you able to get your Orinoco card into Monitor mode? I couldn’t tell from your earlier reply.

FYI - I’ve got Kismet working like a charm with my Prism and Cisco cards in RedHat 8.0. I’ve only used them in monitor mode and have not associated with anything yet.

The Orinoco patch works fine with Redhat 8.0.

ok i'm lost.......

So i have red hat 8.0 installed on my sony 505 thin and light
orinoco works out of the box but i want to get kismet and the other tools working.

now to get kismet to work do you have to recompile with the newer pcmcia-cs-3.1.34 because redhat 8 comes with pcmcia-cs-3.1.31 but the newest is pcmcia-cs-3.2.1
So which do i use??

what command do i use to remove the pcmcia-cs-3.1.31 ?

i can get kismet to install with out recompileing but it errors out and when i run iwpriv it says no priv avalible (or somthing like that) i'm guessing its becuase i'm not useing the recompiled kernel with the shmoo patch.... does that sound right???

TIA
