Very, VERY new to Linux, and am going to set up Vaio laptop with Orinoco Gold card, and eventually sapphire GPS (sooner the better, my state's Governor will soon outlaw WarDriving) Am trying to decide which version of Linux to implement in my set up, and there are so many to pick from. Found RedHat 9 Pro, and it looks solid, but would like someone with Linux experience to point me in the right direction.

You don't need to buy any linux distribution. Visit www.linuxiso.org and burn an installation CD. Also, just a heads up that if you plan on using Kismet with that Orinoco Gold, you'll need to recompile your kernel to support monitor mode for it. For a newbie, this will take a little bit of time to do. |

BW, I live in Arkansas, and my Governor's name is prominently displayed on Netstumbler.com along with Tennessee's as having a bill on their desk ready to be signed that will outlaw this type of activity. I want to use Linux simply because I am sick of MS, and am ready to explore something else. You did right by not assuming what software I intend to use, because I haven't gotten that far yet. This Linux plan is still just a "hypothetical" to me, and I may end up sticking with my XP set up. Just getting an idea of my options....

Thanks BW, below is a link to the Bill that sits on my Governor's desk awaiting his sweaty, stinky signature.

Kismet works just fine in Red Hat 9. I've been using it for a couple weeks with all of the major card types, Orinoco, Cisco, Prism, and Atheros (802.11a).
FYI - You do not need to recompile the kernel to get Kismet (or monitor mode) to work with Red Hat 8 or 9. Just follow this to get everything up and running. Ritchie |
