Replaced a WPC11 card with a Orinoco gold card and cannot get onto my own wifi

Had a WPC11 card that I was useing when I converted from windows - it wasn't Ideal for what I was trying to do with linux, so I purchased a Orinoco card from toxicranch in hopes that it would work better (as everything seems to support them)

This is the older "H" card, and has been setup to do true 128 bit encryption.

The problem is, when I attempt to use the card it doesn't work in linux, My installed to HD os is Fedora Core 4, but I've attempted to use Auditor and Knoppix-STD. I have disabled Mac-Filtering and wep on my router, so anything can connect to it right now. (if i put in the old card, i get online right away).

I apologise, but I will freely admit I'm a novice when it comes to linux, only been running it a few weeks now.

If I go into network configuartion, it's listed as eth1 (eth0 is my nic), and gets listed as "inactive" when I click on activate, I get the following:

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported.
Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Device or resource busy.
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Device or resource busy
Failed to bring up eth1.

Additionally, Noticed in Wireless device configuartion - hardware device tab..... it's identifying the linksys as intersil PRISM2 11Mbps Wirelss Adapter --- that's the same thing it lists for the Orinoco card, Makes me think it doesn't realize it' a new card.... or am I off base here?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Try deleting the eth1 from the network config. You may also have to remove the device from the network config if it showing up as a wired device. Re-add it, and it should show up as an orinoco, then setup the profile.

But if you put in a different card, FC4 is too stupid to notice.

I searched around, and everything I've seen says that the Orinoco drivers are included in FC4, however I cannot get them to load, or maybe I'm just not doing it properly.

When I go to add the card from the hardware list, it doesn't list orinoco drivers anywhere

Run the “dmesg“ command. You should see something like the lines below showing that the ORiNOCO drivers have installed correctly. Note that there are several different ORiNOCO drivers (and different versions) out there, so the details may differ depending on what driver is installed.

# dmesg

I've used an ORiNOCO in Fedora Core 3 and 4 with out a single problem ever. If Fedora isn't for you (I love it) I hear good things about Ubuntu.

Easily. Got the fun GUI front end (gKismet) working too.

EDIT: http://tsholtis.com/images/victory.png There is a screen of it running too.
