Shmoo Patch - Need Help
Hi Guys....
I am new to Linux and I have just completed installing RH9 and was following the "tipsybottle" recipe for patching the Orinoco Card. I followed it and it appeared that it patched the Card but when I do a "# iwpriv eth0" I am not seeing monitor at the bottom of the screen?? I think the problem might be that my Orinoco Card is still using the old drivers but since I am new to Linux, I am not skilled in taking the old drivers out? Can anyone please help me. I have spent a good part of the day trying to figure it out. Though I am learning a lot by doing this exercise but if I spend more time on it, my returns are diminishing rather fast ![]() Looking forward to some replies ![]() |

Did you simply update the orinoco driver with the shmoo patched one?
There's no need to reinstall pcmcia or recompile the kernel in RH9. Just grab the updated orinoco driver (0.13 I think from mem), patch it with shmoo and ./configure, make, make install (you may need to reboot after that to save trying to get the updated driver working). If you've done all of the above and it still ain't working, post some outputs from ./conf and/or make/mk inst... I'm sure the experts here can then help. ![]() EDIT: errr, eth0 _is_ your wireless card, isn't it??? r u sure it's not eth1? ![]() .thefly. |

I have an IBM T20 and it does not have a built in network card hence the wireless card is eth0.
I did download the latest drivers for the Orinoco card(orinoco-0.13b.tar.gz from http://ozlabs.org/people/dgibson/dldwd) . I installed the above drivers and patched it with Shmoo (orinoco-0.13b-patched.diff). I did a ./config, /make, /make install and when I do a iwpriv etho, I dont see monitor at the bottom. If I wanted to show some outputs.... can you walk me through it? like I aid I am new to this stuff. Thanks |

Nevermind.... not only do I NOT know what I am doing in Linux but apparently I am also blind...
I did an iwpriv eth0 and I now see monitor. Thanks for your help. Next question..... How do I run Kismet in monitor mode? I will do a search but if anyone has any pointers I would love to hear from you... ![]() |

kismet_monitor and kismet_hopper will be of direct relevance as your journey continues.. don't forget to modify your /usr/local/etc/kismet.conf appropriately first

your mother said you'd go blind doing that.. ![]() Run "kismet_monitor -H" (no quotes) as root (the -H starts up kismet_hopper which hops the channels) and then run "kismet". ..and as suggested, edit kismet.conf to your liking first.. and kismet_ui.conf too if you wanna change the columns it shows or the colours for various items, etc.. HANDY SAFETY TIP: back them up before editing! Then start 'er up and go for a drive.. _see_ the difference! .thefly. |
