Re: What is the best Linux setup?

Redhat distros provide lots of configuration GUIs, so they are good choice for the easily frustrated. Slackware is generic and a good distro to really learn. |

slackware is hardly generic
slackware boasts being the most unix like distro and i believe them. very few guis and lots of learning if u wanna config it right its one of those jump in and get alot more than your feet wet distro's

if you want to use airsnort with an orinoco card, you need to patch the orinoco drivers so that your card can be put into monitor mode. wow, im surprised nobody flamed you guys and said 'this has been said before', but i believe forums are meant to help people not to tell people to do searches, so here is a link
http://airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html also, ive never used knoppix before is it a read only FS? if so, i dont see how youre gonna be able to apply this patch.. or i could be wrong and everything will work fine. good luck. |

here is a quote from the site i gave you:
For those unfamiliar with applying patches, the command looks something like this when applied from the parent directory of your pcmcia-cs source tree: patch -p0 < orinoco-09b-packet-1.diff hope that helps ![]() |

BTW, I would rather see these type of questions instead of the "omifreakinggod, my card doesn't work and why is Marius the mean wireless uberlord with poor communication skills?" |

Files and directory are not "locked", they have permissions. This is not the best link but here are some basic commands. You want to use chmod to change permissions. If you don't know how to use a command use man, i.e. man chmod, which gives you a listing of options and how to use the command. For example, if you want to make a directory and all of the files and directories inside readable, writeable, and executable: chmod -R 777 /your/dir Typically, you will need to be root to do this and you probably don't want to do this all the time because it means everything is open to everybody. When I used to teach, I recommended Harley Hahn's book "A Student's Guide to Unix" I would also recommend "Running Linux" (as do many others). Used copies of either work just as well as the newest edition. |
