ZipSlack + XP

Hi, in an attempt to make my own small wardriving linux install I decided to give ZipSlack a go. I've used this before on my old win98 machine and could boot into it perfectly. I read that XP requires a boot disk in order to enter ZipSlack. I downloaded the bootdisk.img and created a bootdisk. With my win 98 machine, putting boot disks in the A: drive would make my PC boot from the disk.

However, winXP refuses to and will load windows regardless.

So, tow questions...

1) am I right to assume that the boot.ini file is only for loading different versions of windows and not what I am looking for?

2) how do i get my laptop to boot from the A:? Is it through windows or bios?

TIA

BIOS. There should be an entry for Boot Order or something similar. Try "A:, CD, C:" if it has the option. That way it will check the floppy, then CD and then finally the hard drive.

One note: Once you make this change you will have to make sure there is no floppy in the system when booting into Windows or it will hang on a non-bootable floppy (if it does pop-out the floppy and hit any key to 'continue'). You may be familiar with this, but wanted to mention it to provide as complete an answer as I could.

What system do you have?

With XP you can format a floppy disk and make it a bootable DOS disk.[place floppy in drive A, right click, select format, and one of the options allows the selection....]

The bootdisk from slackware site is only to boot and start the install process.

The boodisk from the MS site is only to start the install process for XP.

You may also want to check the boot order in the bios.... [I know I usually set the ones I setup to boot from the harddisk first; speeds bootup process a little, and is a very basic anti-virus prevention method {if you accidentally start the machine with an infected floppy])

Is this DOS pure 386/486 or V86 mode? (See attached picture of trying to load linux from the command prompt.

Anyone know a generic way of doing this? I know most pc's display an output on boot before the OS loads but mine doesn't. It just displays the manufacturers logo.

Thanks for your help.

theothers. to get around the manufactures logo. it depends on the who makes ur laptop. almost all that info is in the BIOS though. i have an older hp laptop. i fergot what they 'called' the option, but it kinda sticks out, like 'show post' or 'fast boot'...everyones different though. i hated that damn hp logo...i just wanted to see it 'POST'.

Turn on the unit and hold down the DELETE key until the System Setup screen appears.

Under the "Advanced CMOS Setup".

Set 1st Boot Device to Floppy
Set 2nd Boot Device to CDROM
Set 3rd Boot Device to Hard Drive

That should do it.

Thank you very much. I'll give it a go now.

After trying ------->

Yep, thanks it worked perfectly. Wow, that was the first time I'd ever thought "I wish my laptop came with instructions". Now all i need to do is get it working in a wardriving frame of mind. Time to start reading i think. If any ZipSlack users want to PM me I'd love to hear from you. Thanks, The Others
