Charging for weekly wireless access???
We are looking in to offering internet access through the local cable modem provider to short term rental homes. The problem is the billing. We were thinking of having it so that the rental properties would be equipped at all times for internet access through a wireless router. The rental company would then add that cost to the weekly cost of the property. That way they pay the monthly fee for service and the house is equipped whether the client wants it or not.
However, we would like to be able to offer it on a weekly basis. The customer comes in and loads a browser and gets a secured page that asks for CC info. They enter that info and get internet access for a week. The problem with that is that there would need to be a server somewhere between them and the internet, most likely at the head-in. Not a big deal but definitely a PITA. Pretty much I'm just looking for thoughts on this as it could be a good monthly income if it is put in enough homes. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. panda

I have two quick thoughts on this:
1. You want a captive portal 2. You need to check the license agreement of your cable provider to asee if you are allowed to re-sell it's service.

I'll google captive portal, that's new to me.
We are working hand in hand with the ISP on this. It's their idea (which is why I think it may work). Thanks for the help! panda

panda,
The captive portal is a page that will not allow access without some sort of authorization. There are any number of options out there. STW for "kiosks", "hotspots" along with "captive portals". All operate in a similar manner. PM me if you need any links.

Thanks Thorn. I found a couple and get the general idea. A local WISP has one setup so it makes some sense. The only problem is that the portal would need to go at the major ISP's data center and that may not happen. It'd be easier to just have the WIFI on all the time and just have a set fee, but the rental agency won't go for it (I don't think).
