ControlAP Info

I've tried to e-mail MediaTracker a few times but haven't gotten a response, hopefully someone here has the info.

We're looking at using ControlAP to handle a Hotspot area for some condo's, but the antenna also covers a business park that we'd like to sign up people on a monthly basis for. Can ControlAP handle this?

Thanks in advance.

If your looking at selling a monthly service as a fixed wireless provider in these area's you don't need any of that type of software. Post more specs. on what your trying to do. Sounds like a WISP more than a Hotspot provider. I run a WISP and can help in that area.

I run a WISP as well. We figured that since we have signal all over Lake Tahoe, we might as well allow people to hop on it for a daily access fee if they like.

So, we're trying to handle both through the same antennas.

Good to see someone else who does it though, now I can ask more questions.

Understand now, I do river coverage as well but at this time people are paying a monthly fee, not much for visiting boaters so far, I have had some marinas ask about daily fees though and I'm looking at possibly using rental equipment up front with mac addresses already in the radio's but it could be a headache that way. I know there is RADIUS programs made for it but have'nt looked into them yet.

Is it worth it?

Hey Guyz I've been looking into setting up and being a WISP But I'm not sure if it'll be very profitble. I'm sure in the future some locations will as more people get labtops and what not, but are you guyz making some decent money out of this? If so just curios how much as far as like how many differnt customers you have and what not. Just curios how much you guyz are making and how much you charge your customers. Also Is there any other good programs out there besides control AP. As well as is there any way to restrict internet usage during certain times if they pay via credit card?Like I only want to have internet availble from 5pm to 6am? Thanks for any ideas or thoughts on this.

A very good question!!

I'm wondering if this is legal to do.

Lets say I have comcast Cable High Speed Interet. Then lets say I setup a wireless network. And then setup Control AP Is it legal for me to charge people to get on to my wireless network. I know its illegal to share cable TV,
But where I setup my own private network is it legal to charge people to access my network and then provide them with High speed internet that I'm getting from Comcast Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

Thanks

Why don't you check Comcast's TOS? And it's laptop.

Yes, you can make good money with a WISP. Even if there is competition, its all how you run your company.

No, you can't set up a hotspot with a consumer account and charge users if you are connected to Comcast. Though you can pay the extra dough for a business account and do it that way, though I will still talk to the rep about it. DSL may be a better option there.

You won't find a better program than ControlAP for the price. NoCat is very good too, if you're much more tech savvy.

Comcast even with a business account does not allow you to resell it. I spent 9 months dealing with a business rep. and it was a big NO. On the other side of that the download is good but what if 3 business's decide to upload 10Megs of email at the same time???? the upload sucks and they call and BITCH at you and your service. The cheapest way to start is with SDSL.As far as control ap I'm gonna start looking at that and am also about to try Odyssy from Funk software, Liquid edge pm me with some contact info or let me know and I will send mine to you sounds like we're doin similar coverage and maybe able to help each other out.
