McDonald's Inet Access

I have been reading that McDonald's has free inet access. I can attest that they are in the process of installing it in a local store near me.

I was out for a war drive, when i saw the sign that read something along the lines of Free High Speed Wireless Internet

This store is located in Gulfport, MS on HWY 49 and HWY 90. They did not appear to have wi-fi installed yet as i didnt get any results on netstumbler and i was too lazy to go into the store to check it out.

Anyone else have similar stories ?

At least two Mc Donalds in my area have WiFi.

The SSID is "surfhere" and the service is provided through Toshiba.

www.surfhere.com

For $5 an hour I haven't bothered using the service. I only went in once but they wouldn't give me free access with a meal.

So you all know, the map at http://www.mcdwireless.com is total BS. In manhatten they listed every last mcdonalds as having wifi, 2/3 of the stores listed there do not have wifi when you goto them, I have warstroled into 4 differnt mcdonalds that were listed as having wifi, and not one signal from mcdonalds (just private APs, verizon payphones and starbucks), also not one visual mention with a sign or logo they have it. Even the 25 Beford St. in Stamford CT mcdonalds which is in the suburbs (well a city in the suburbs) is lsited to have wifi, it doesn't I check it too. That map is total BS. ITs been 2 months now since they put up those locations, and still no wifi at them. It used to be accurate a very long time ago.

EDIT

Although a handful of locations (1/10 on the official map) actually have it and I confirmed it, and those locations are very visable marked with posters and signs that say that mcdonalds has wifi.

Its been 2 months, and cometa's site is gone, IDK about the service at the ones that have it. I'll check today. Cometa provided service to MCD. Cometa's wifi site is gone. And Cometa is supposedly bankrupt and gone. MCDs wireless still is. I have no clue what happened with the existing working cometa hotspots. I think we now have vapor-fi (vapor wifi), or wifi.bomb

Also note to all u for pay hotspot, in a place like NYC, u wanna put a wifi jammer cuz I will just use ur AC 120v outlet and directional antenna to a free hotspot.

McDonalds and WIFI go well together, if you want to gain weight and get your keyboard covered in grease.

I was trying to figure out what language that was written in. My best guess is Tard... Any Tards here that can verify that? Shit, guess that question is better asked in the bin and us common folk can no longer post there.

I haven't the foggiest idea what it is. My first impression that it was AOhell-chat-I'm-a-preteen-bubble-gum-chewing-idiot-speak, but Tard is also a good guess.

If he's talking about active RF jammers, then it's going to be banned Tard.

I ment. Restaurants that offer wifi access need to put wifi signal jammers (active jammers, or anti-wifi wall paper) to stop people from using non-restaurant wifi networks.

For example, I will go to starbucks, and never pay for their wifi, I will just use a high gain directional antenna and use someone else wifi (there is a nice park with a free hotspot across the street from a starbucks I use (emenity is the provider). The only function the starbucks serves is to provide me with a 120v AC outlet because my laptop's batteries dont last more than 1 hr, and to provide me with a really good soft seat to sit down on (some have recliner style seats). I would never use the starbuck's wifi. $6 an hour is way too much.

Also the mcdonalds that I said earlier above I tested to have wifi access. I visited it (724 broadway, 6th street and broadway nearest intersection) 2 months ago. It still has wifi (SSID ~"Wayport-access"), except here comes the sad part. All the M with @ logos are gone, all official McD logos relating to wifi and McD's wifi plans are gone, all posters to wifi and stickers on teh doors and even on the store sign are gone. The only mention there is wifi is a clear plastic sheet, private made (probably by the franchise owner), in plain font and black letters that says "wifi" on one of the windows. I did not enter the store or load up a webpage (battery died before I could), just stood outside it and connected and got a IP that's DNS said ....*.mcd.*....., so that must have been the store's wifi network.

McD corporatly abandoned its wifi plans I think, and whatever installations they had became the franchise owners responsibilty, and McD told the owners, u can turn it off, use ur own provider, or use our partner wayport.

Strangly in union square park I still get a few rare detects from 2 "Cometa-hotspot" but the signals are weak and I cant figure out where they are coming from. Its for sure not from the union square mcdonalds.
