Military Services Hotspot
Okay, I am volunteering my time to help build a wifi hotspot for a "cafe" in a services lounge built for the Airman.
Any suggestions on how to build or write a plan of action? Just thought this would be good experience for me to work with. I have lots of hands on working with Antennas / Setting up wifi / security, so I feel that I could do this. Equipment- Linksys WRT54G modified with a fan to support higher mW (or maybe not) And one or two flat panels directional either ceiling mounted or wall mounted on both sides of cafe. I don't know if thats overkill though, I would like to try to extend the network past the cafe and into the Airman's Lounge (Sofas and Couches) as well as the dining/reception hall area. I can take pictures of the setup for suggestions from you guys. I just want to make this as professional as possible. I may try to get "Nocatsplash" loaded onto the router, as well as Satori. I would like to set up QOS in order of Surfing - Email - Your normal small bandwith hoggers, and let the bittorrents and p2p apps at the bottom. My security would be comprimised of using the setting to not allow people to see other people on the network. The nocatsplash would be for DoD Policies, and NO this would not even be connected to the NIPRnet at all, so it will be its own connection through cable/dsl/trunk line. I have access to a radio shop that can provide cabling for any antennas. And my shop is a full fledged eletronics shop. I would like to try to write a proposal, but, I guess I got to do some research on how to do that in the correct military format. Thanks for any advice you all may give. -Fin "serving the country one coffee at a time" |

Sveasofts offerings are OK, however I'd look into the EWRT firmware (http://www.portless.net/menu/ewrt/) since it has nocat built in. All you would need would be a small back end box to run the database on, and you'd have a nice little setup.
Have'nt had a chance to play with this yet, but it looks to be about right for your purposes.

what base are you doing this at?
also dont do this at Misawa AB japan we have some IIS/IPO guys that are really anal about wireless networks on base. but as long as you arent going through the base network (which would be ilegal per many afi's and afnoids). I think it it would be cooler than paying 60 dollars a month for a gay DSL ISP (the only one on base) that loggs you off every 24 hours. enough of that are you a contractor? an airman? an instructor? how did you come accross this job? |

At least you have access to DSL. Up untill about 3 months ago, the only ISP available on base was 56K dialup. Now we have cable, which is better than dialup, but the most I've been able to squeeze through this thing is about 650K... Needless to say, I'm glad to be leaving soon...

OK.. So it seems to be a Global thing...
IIS/IPO/Net Security geeks are totaly Anal... Ours would send out threating (Article 15) letters whenever our windows servers would try to connect to shares on the main base servers. Well ok I can kinda see the logic, but the main base servers contained the main Email/www/ftp servers used by all, and most units had some netmon tools setup to monitor the main servers/routers etc. These were all considered to be "Network attacks"... All this started after they installed "Sidewinder", and they had 1 guy sit there all day/night to do nothing but monitor all the logs.. (Mostly false positives) ![]()
