New to hotspots
I'm new to setting up hotspots so I don't even know where to start.
I have a downtown location and I want to allow people to use wireless in the area. I want to set up a free service for now. Current hardware: D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router I also have a P3-550 server I can use to run the software OR, if it's possible, I'd like to run the software from my webhost (ie. I have hosting on an ISP with apache, php, mysql, etc) and I would prefer to run it through there if it's possible. I'm looking for something that's easy to set up and allows me to limit what people can do, how much bandwidth they're assigned (I have 10mbit down, 1mbit up and I want to give the wireless users 3mbit down and 250kb up) and, maybe later, charge for access. What software can I use to achieve this? Edit: Also, free is the price I like best. |

Free means NoCat. nocat.net Others are going to cost anywhere from about $100 to several thouand, depending on features.
Search through the HotSpot forum for additional information, and then search the rest of the forums for old posts on hotspots that might predate the HS Forum. There is a lot of prior discussion on this, and most of it is still valid.
