Panera Bread
I'll kick this forum topic off. Our local Panera bread (Breckenridge and Dutchmans Lane, Louisville KY) has free 802.11b access now. SSID id is PANERA. They have a nice pamphlet that explains how to set up and connect along with an 866 number to call for help if you totally get stuck. VPN is supported!
I haven't used it yet, but I picked up a pamphlet for future use. It looks like it has been well thought out and is being rolled out to many of their restaurants. Their website ( Panera Bread WIFI ) shows current locations. Bill |

Well, I went to the new Panera at Southgate here in Colorado Springs this past Monday. They had a sign in the window that read, "Free Wi-Fi!" and I had my laptop in my briefcase. However, when I ordered my toasted cinnamon-crunch bagel, as I asked the nice lady if the free Wi-Fi was working yet.
"I don't think so. Now, what is that again?" I explained it to her and she said she'd never heard of it before. I shrugged, took my bagel, and grabbed a table. Cracked open the X21 and...nothing. Oh, well. Probably still getting the bugs out of it. Then it hit me: Whoops! I had all networking protocols disabled after Saturday's wardrive. So I re-enabled TCP/IP and rebooted. As soon as I did, it autoconnected, showed me a policy screen, and I was in. Wasn't super fast--DSLReports tagged it as 800 Kbps downlink--but fast enough to be useful. I was impressed enough to move our Delphi Meetup to Panera from Pike's Perk downtown, which has wireless but it costs. The two new Paneras in the Springs both have free Wi-Fi, as does an older one in Niles, Illinois, where my mother-in-law lives. It looks like they are rolling out free hotspots in as many of their stores as they can. If there's a Panera anywhere near you, a quick wardrive past the front door should tell you--and you can legally connect to this one! --73-- --Novilio |

[[ )( ]] Porky Perk Coffee House If Porky's decided to charge for the service, the tag might look like this: [[ )( $ ]] Porky Perk Coffee House The symbols should be enclosed in some kind of frame (I used double brackets here as a simple example) to make parsing by utilities easier. I talked about this in my book, and it's so obvious a thing I'm surprised it hasn't come up in discussion about the industry. Connecting to the wrong AP is a serious problem in an industry that combines non-technical people with idiots who don't turn on WEP. Ideally, our client adapters should be able to tell by inspection whether a hotspot is legal for us to connect to. It shouldn't be left completely to the judgment of the user, as it is now, or to completely dumb clients that will gleefully connect to whatever signal is strongest at its antennas. --73-- --Novilio |

Around the Dayton/Xenia/Fairborn/Springfield Ohio area are some good hotspots. There is a Buffalo Wild Wings in Huber Hts.off I-70 and SR 202 that has access, and another one in Beavercreek off I-675 and N.Fairfield Rd.There is also a Panera Bread near downtown Dayton that has access.I am hoping the Panera in Beavercreek(same exit) will have it soon as well. Also, most Flying J truckstops have access too. They charge I believe $4.95 a day for access, but they have it.It is run by TON services(a company they are in with) and is pretty good from what I hear. There are other spots as well, but I don't remember them offhand. You can go to www.jiwire.com or www.wififreeaccess.com and look them up.The ones I have placed here are ok spots as far as signal, etc.Have a great day and happy hunting.

Hey Neighbor!
Hey, I'm just down the road in Mason, OH. Check it out at WIGLE
To return to the thread, has anyone actually gotten VPN to work at Panera? I'm here, and their help desk isn't open. I'm trying to use Cisco's VPN client (IPSEC, Port 443?) into work. It can't establish a connection to either of our three servers - which worked fine from home a half hour ago. BTW, they're running SonicWall firewall with content filtering enabled. No Fark for this bad boy - just like at work ![]()
