Setting up a Hot Spot
I want to set up a hot spot through a cooperative agreement with a local internet cafe that already has a broadband cable connection. I've been doing a lot of research and the ZyAir B4000 Hot Spot in a Box looks good without any of the external AAA.
See it here: http://www.us.zyxel.com/product/mode...lue=1021876859 It can be had for around $500 and with the revenue sharing to be done with the Cafe it might take a while to break even but it's more about building a presence and community service. Any comments or suggestions? Compaq 710 US , Win XP, Orinoco Gold with 5db mag mount for stumbling (thanks FAB) ![]() |

The Zyxel looks pretty slick actually, it would be ideal for somebody who doesn't want to bother with keeping a PC running or configuring a captive portal. This is just the ticket for all the coffeehouses and cafes that want to get into the wireless thing, but are turned off by all the tech skills required.
Of course you could do all of this (and have more customization options) with a dedicated workstation and AP for less money, but the learning curve is steeper. With the Zyxel, all you need to do is remember the password (admin) and never change it And the little printer is nice so you can still have hard copies for the accountant after somebody hacks into the thing and destroys everything else. |
