Check out Google and wireless access search sites

I assume by free wireless, you are referring to legal free wireless (shake your head yes -- trust me on this one). The best thing to do is to check out out Google and several of the free wireless access search sites such as wififreespot.com. Other good places to look are Panera Bread and Schlotzsky's Deli. They have been rolling out free Wifi access the last couple months.

As far as your other questions -- poke around the site and learn. There is several years of information here to read and digest -- and remember the search function is always your best friend.

Welcome to the world of Wardriving. I am fairly new to it myself. I lived in Springfield, MO for quite some time, unfortunately it was well before 802.11 hit the scene. Anyway, I would love to hear what results you come up with in SW MO. As for equipment, I use a Compaq iPAQ, Panasonic laptop, Net & Ministumbler (haven't got the new version yet), two Orinoco gold cards, and an omnidirectional for general stumbling as well as a yagi for narrowing down the location of a point. Good luck.
