Web redirects and legal issues
Just for fun I was considering putting up a free web hotspot in my apartment building but had a few questions;
Using 2k Server and a second NIC, is there any way to force a new user to a terms of service splash page on connect, then register the MAC address as an "informed/authorized" connection? And if I did this stating what services were available, like only web, POP3, vpn, etc, would I this open me up for more liabilty, mitigate any liabilty, or really have no effect? I'm guessing the latter. |

Control AP.
Good question. You might want to look at the Terms of Service for community hotspot systems like PersonalTelco, SeattleWireless and NYCwireless

![]() BTW, there are others depending on what you are doing. You specified a W2k server, which low on my OS choises. You probably also don't want to run this on a machine you actually use on a day to day basis. My preference for this type of setup (free) is NoCat (nocat.com) and for a pay hotspot is Mikrotik (www.mikrotik.com). Put either on an isolated Pent I box and you're golden.

The 2K box is my home DC, all I use it for is for FTP server, and Winamp. Is a DMZ box through my linksys AP/NAT.
BTW free is the best Think that will be an issue? Thanks for all the info. Last edited by Twisted : 01-26-2004 at 07:26 PM. |

It could be an issue. After all, you're letting people access a machine. I just like to keep things seperate. As long as it's on the DMZ you'll probably be in good shape.
IMHO, free is OK, as long as you're getting something of value to you out of it (knowledge, etc.), but I don't think it's the best. Best is when the users are paying you. ![]()
