Wireless AP Setup

I'm going to be setting up a wireless hotspot soon, and trying to understand all the different types of access control software.

FirstSpot -> Looks very good has everything I need to do but doesn’t support a RADIUS server,
ControlAP -> Cheap, doesn’t seem to have as many features, but does support a RADIUS Server
NoCat -> Now I’m not a unix guy at all but this is highly recommend by most of you, it would be a major learning curve and I would like to avoid it if possible.

I will be running multiple hot spot locations, my ideal setup would be:

The user pulls out his laptop, open’s his browser and is redirected to my welcome page (Captive Portal). There he can either log on with a username & password or buy air time though paypal or credit card. As far as credit card and paypal authentication I would like the user to be redirected to the paypal or credit card website (as FirstSpot does) I also want the user to be able to use the same username and password for all my hot spots.

Thanks!!

One warning: If you have specific questions, frame them has such. Otherwise don't get an attitude about getting directed to Search. This thread can also be removed.

Now...am I the only one missing where the question lies? Not to start any crap but if you want somewhere to post your thoughts and dreams, start a blog.

Yes I’ve read that.. Has anyone actually used this software in a working WISP?? From what I read, it doesn't look like too many have. If anyone could give me feedback on the products I would appreciate it..

I beta tested Control AP. At that time the modules for Credit card interface weren't finished, so I can't tell you how those worked. However, everything they had at the time worked very well.

I eventually went to Mikrotik and custom scripts. (But that's a *nix solution, so you're probably not interested in that.)

Thank you, One last question...

I am going to be using a Access Point and NOT a Wireless PC Card. I've read that ControlAP doesn't work when using a Access Point.... For example in the demo version my "AP Adapter" would be the NIC connected to the access point.

That was exactly one of the setups that I tested, and it worked fine. Two standard (i.e. wired) NICs; one was the WAN link, and the other used a crossover cable to the AP. It worked like a charm.

However, I don't know if they've changed something since then. It was a year ago that I was doing the beta-tests.

Take a look at this URL's

http://controlap.com/help/pro

https://mediatracker.com/hotspot/register.jsp

https://mediatracker.com/hotspot/

It might give you some of the look and feel of ControlAP Plus & Pro

The thing with ControlAP that i think is not so good is that it runs
it own internal webserver, i would like to se IIS or Apache...
