I run an IT shop in Baton Rouge. We are looking to install some free WiFi around places where folks escaping hurricanes and other weird stuff that happens down SE of here) may congregate. We like a cool new Welcome Center at Butte la Rose as one site. We want to hit the parking area in front of the Center and off to one side. We also want to hit DOTD's parking lot, which is on the other side of the elevated interstate from the Welcome Center. Lots of truckers use the site to rest up nights and we thought to shoot them a nice little broadband signal so they can chat with the kiddie’s back home. Thing is, Bell wants a fortune to do a site survey and we barely have the funds to pay the dsl and install the hardware.
Do any of you know the area? I'd be interested in your ideas concerning antennae placement. I want to hit the outside of the center and there's a low radio tower (20-30 feet high) tower that might do the trick. I will probably put in some sort of Omni like the one Cisco makes. They claim it has a 100-yard radius. Any of you ever played with one? How far will it throw a signal? Ok, so that's the center. Don't even care to get a signal inside because the boss is fraid it might become an Internet cafe - right, but they do serve coffee, hummmmm? The hard part's reaching the truckers across the way. I figure they are maybe ca. 500 yards away and there's all this elevated concrete Interstate in the way. Might could shoot under it, but that's pretty low down. I can go up the adjacent way huge DOTD tower and shoot both areas from it, but then my costs and the number of gadgets I need start going up. I am interested to see if anybody can dummy out an alternative that will actually work. I should have some pdf's of the area showing distance soon. I will be delighted if any of you know the site and might take an interest in turning it into a free hot spot for travelers. I'm in a hurry, so let me know your thoughts if you are familiar with the area. I contacted you because I know you are familiar with the tech. More Anon I hope DBP

You can get a jump on things here.
http://www.terabeam.com/support/calculations/ That concrete obstacle is going to be a problem. Got an address or coordinates? Last edited by wrzwaldo : 04-27-2006 at 03:34 PM. |

Wrong sub-section of the forums, and wrong thread.
Split to it's own thread and moved to the right sub-section. Dutch

Hey, brwdxpxl....brdrxelo.....brwrdummy..... where's that damn cajun?
Run over there and help him spec it out. Seriously, what is your budget? If this is a community project, I might be willing to get suckered into another one. I am a few hundred miles away, but might be able to volunteer a weekend and volunteer some of my gofers. Find it on Google maps. MikeP

But you probably kept me from getting sucked into the volunteer routine again. And saved me a few hundred dollars in gas. MikeP

And if he was scared off by having his posts moved to a seperate thread and into the right section, I wonder if it would be worth doing any work for him. Dutch

I just woke up on my desk after a twelve-pack for lunch. I'll have to investigate this when I get to the house tonight.

This looks to be some more of our great state workers doing exactly what they get paid to do. Let someone else do all the work while they sit around taking credit for it. If this guy were really interested in getting us down into the swamps hooking up wifi, he would have given some contact info.
As he is the IT Director for what ever DOTD or State Department he works for. He doesn't want his boss to know that he's a dumbshit and doesn't know what he is doing when it comes to wifi.( I found that most IT guys do not know anything about the inner workings of wifi.) Don't worry, I have some friends and family in DOTD that might be able to track this bozo down. The reason I'm thinking he is in DOTD is because if I remember right, that is the only department that can "do thing" like this around state highways and places that the state runs under their funding. State worker joke: If you have 5 lezbians and 5 state workers, what do you have? 10 people that don't do dick ![]()

IP block says "DEPARTMENT OF CULTURE RECREATION AND TOURISM LA" so the bit about the "Welcome Center" makes sense. Having said that, it sure seems like this should be an official state project, and if they don't know what they're doing, it should be put out for bid, just like any other state project. Doing it this way is half-assed.

OK this has got to be the same guy. All of this information is public record so I haven't posted anything this guy doesn't want out there. It took me about 5 minutes to run it down after seeing him post his "home Page" into his profile.

We have a department of Culture Recreation and tourism???? Ahhh, that must have been the reason our state spent all that money sending a bunch of politicians to Austin Texas to figure out what we are doing wrong here. Watch the news everyone, you will figure out what is wrong down here in just a few segments ![]()
