Goodness, we are certainly territorial and rather... I'm glad we presumably share some social or maybe cultural traits. No matter. I was initially checking to see if any of the chalkers out there thought putting a free hot spot at the Atchafalaya Welcome Center was a good idea. Seems you do so that's fine. I had several other rather philosophical questions, but will not risk invoking another pecking party by broaching them. And yep, I was going for a freebie - thought there might be somebody near by who could help this "newbie" (who wrote his first Fortran out on a blackboard in 1970) determine the effect that the elevated chunk of concrete covered with 18 wheelers that runs between the center and the trucker parking will have on a wireless signal from a range of different elevated points. The entire area I want to hit only has a diameter of 1100 feet with the center near center, so I hope it won't be rocket science. I wasn't looking for a full blown site survey, just a little advice from a group with significant experience deploying and "studying" wireless data signals.

Anyway, I've plugged the project into a little GIS application that should save the taxpayers the gazillion contractors charges for a "survey" (ca. $8K). Will probably put up a Cisco omni to hit the centers parking lot and take our contractor's suggestions for reaching the truckers, provided it's cost effective.

Per your reaction to state government, I hope you will be pleased that we just saved you hard working taxpayers $230 a month at the Center by replacing a 128K frame drop with a $50/mth DSL line. I take a great deal of pride in spending as few of your tax dollars as I can. I figure that's probably the only way I will ever get a raise.

Thanks and no more anon.

DBP.

I'll assume for the moment that you're not being deliberately provoking, but just so you know calling us "chalkers" is about like calling a Jew a "kike". It's insulting, to say the least.

Regarding your first FORTRAN code in 1970, good for you, but around here that's not exactly unique.

As far as the cost of a survey being an average of $8k, that's not surprising, for the simple reason that people who do this for a living know what they are doing, and have the proper equipment to do the survey. It may not be rocket science, but there is more science to it than you might imagine.

Sure, you can set up an AP and hope it works, but that is exactly why your approach is half-assed. If there are problems regarding signal propogation, you're chances of figuring out what is going wrong are about zero. A proper site survey would find those issues before they are a problem, and allow them to be mitigated. Someone coming in to correct a problem after the fact is going to charge a lot more.

Personally, I would rather see the state spend the money correctly and have the job done right instead of half assed like so many other tax funded projects.

What is a better service to the constituants? Spend the money to do the job right so they have good reliable service, or do it half assed and the cheap way so that it isn't usable?

Which do you think is the bigger waste of money?

I caught the chalker comment as well. I surely hope he reads alot more before trying to deploy a free wireless network. He sure didn't read enough of this forum before trying to get us to work for the state government for free.

As far as you saving us locals money. Your budget most likely got cut. That's why you went to cheaper hardware/network costs. Blanco is cutting allot of stuff. Trust me I know, my father works in the Gov sector.

As far as what set me off, was you coming in here not being forthright or with good intentions. If that is the way you handle your business, I can tell you that you aren't very smart in any facet of your life. There are allot of professional people in this forum that exchange ideas and knowledge. We share a common goal, we share the idea of being lawfull, honest, and above all we share thruths. We do not pretend to be someone whom we are not to get answers for a simple problem. We share the quest for knowledge and we travel well together.

You are more than welcome to hang out with us as long you are truthfull and lawfull with your intentions. You would most likely be a welcome edition. I just think you went about your first post the absolute wrong way. Especially since you represent our state in this forum that is popular around the world. If you feel you cannot deal with being truthfull then you best be off to go play with your little server.
