Development For GPS in PocketPC

Right,

Here it goes... I'd like to develop a program for PocketPC to interface with a GPS (over bluetooth). The program could then output the GPS Data in a legible format and at the user's command save a position in a standard enough format (XML etc).

Any pointers? Or does a freeware program like the above exist? (I'm sure it does somewhere)

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you're getting at, or want to accomplish. If the PocketPC and the GPS both have Bluetooth, they already do this, via a BT virtual serial port. As to the position data, there is already a widely accepted format: NMEA 0183 v2.0 and higher.

Basically I want a bare bones package to take data from a COM Port (which would have a GPS connected over bluetooth). And then at the touch of a button save a position. In essence a GPS package but with no fancy extra's. Position logging and the ability to give a distance to a stored position/show when a stored position is coming close. No maps needed and it wouldn't be used for Stumbling so Wifi wouldn't come into it.

So what you really need is a database that will store a Long/Lat waypoint from serial input on a user command and continuously compare that to the current position.

Most GPS units, even the oldest and cheapest (w/o mapping) do exactly this. They functions are in hardware, and are designed to this very well. Rather than going to an PPC application, you'd be better off just buying a GPS off eBay. I'd suggest an Garmin Etrex or the Magellan 315.

Yeah, thats what I need to do. But I have 3 GPS units already. The challenge is to get a program on PPC that does it

Thanks guys. They should keep me busy. Can't get GPS Engine to work under the WM6. Must be the lack of VB runtimes which won't install (Backward compatibility issue)

The GPS API's are flaky on some platforms. It might be simpler to start w/ just opening the GPS's virtual comm port, and getting that working first.
