Antenna wiring question ?

I want to mount a 12 dB Yaggi antenna on my roof. The total distance from the antenna to the computer would be aprox. 100'.

What kind of cable should be used to connect the two together ????

LMR-240 or better if you've got the cash. You'll have about 12.7 dB loss It will cost you about 0.47 /foot which isn't too bad. Check out the specs at Times Microwave It's pretty thick stuff but running from the roof shouldn't be too much of an issue.

You'll probably want to pig tail the computer end, and get a higher gain Yagi as the cable loss will negate the Yagi

LMR-240 is a poor choice for a 100' run. I would recommend at least LMR-400 (6.6dB loss). Is this to be hooked to a PCI wireless adapter?

If you are going this long, I would put the whole AP on the roof, and run cat 5 down.

I would suggest that also. But I got the feeling an AP is not involved.

Buying the AP will probably be cheaper than the cable.

Good point.

juggler,

What exactly are you attempting to accomplish with this?

That LMR 400 is thick, but it is better.

I want to receive my wireless signal in my garage. I could go with the AP, but what is the max length I could run with the CAT 5 ?

I wanted to trench a cable to the garage but digging a trench is no good, it would be going across a stream, and 2 underground storage tanks. If I went around these, the distance for the cable would be greater.

If I put an antenna on the roof, there would be about 35Ft of cable outside the garage, and about 60 feet inside.

If I go the AP, what is recommended. I don't know much about this wireless
access, I am just trying to get it working.

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/expla...ble-length.asp

100 Meters equals 328.084 Feet.

What was referred to on the cat5 was to remote the AP near the antenna (unless this is a client computer). What type of network are you running on the wireless? Ad-hoc or Infrastructure? What is the layout of your network now? How far would the cable run be? Is a fiber run an option?

Cat5 can run up to 320 ft.

If you're attempting to just get wireless to a nearby garage (or other building) then a 12dBi antenna is overkill, as is 100 ft of transmission cable. That long a run of cable will kill the signal of most APs and/or wireless cards, which is why people are recommending a remote AP. Search here on "PoE" and "Power over Ethernet" for ideas on how to run a remote AP.

It sounds like you really need to find someone locally who can design and build the system for you. This isn't rocket science, but you have to know something about both computer and radio systems.

I bring my laptop to the garage, with an orinco gold card, and my 12db yagi I get a signal and access to the the net, but the signal is just 2 bars.

The antenna is on the work bench pointing towards my house.

I want to be able to get the signal on my desktop pc, and mount the antenna on the roof.

Running a cable underground , CAN'T HAPPEN !!

What would be needed to get the desktop to receive the signal.

I have read that a pci/pcmcia adapter would be needed if I used the orinco card.

I would rather just run the antenna direct to the pc, or use the AP near the antenna , and run CAT 5 down to the computer.
But I don't know whats needed by the desktop ???????

The garage is about 600' from the house.

Do you have an AP now? Where is it? If you have an AP and it is in the house use something like a WET11 at the antenna. From it cat5 to your computer (assuming you have a network card installed). There are a few threads here that describe a couple of ways to get this accomplished.

The wireless network inside my house works fine.

I just want to be able to bring another computer inside my GARAGE that is about 600 FEET AWAY from my house and receive my wireless signal.

No direct connection to my house, just wireless.

My laptop gets the signal if I bring it to the garage with a 12dB Yagi.

Without the antenna , the signal gets lost.

What is needed to get the signal in the GARAGE 600' away from the source
to my NEW DESKTOP IN THE GARAGE ???????
